Message from the Dean

Pat Wahl, Dean of the School of Public Health and Community Medicine

Welcome to the UW School of Public Health. We're ranked fourth in the nation in the 2007 US News & World Report graduate school survey, which places us second among publicly funded schools. We're the only West Coast school in the top five on US News' list, and the only accredited school of public health north of Berkeley and west of Minneapolis. We have five departments -- Biostatistics, Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Global Health, and Health Services -- and offer BS, MPH, MS, MHA, and PhD degrees. You'll also find interdisciplinary programs in Maternal and Child Health, Nutritional Sciences, Pathobiology, and Public Health Genetics.

Public health is, by nature, collaborative: in the process of solving public health problems, we work with engineers, other health science professionals, anthropologists, urban planners, psychologists, lawyers, even geographers. Here at the School you'll find many interdisciplinary centers and institutes, which means our faculty and students get involved with many different programs, departments, and schools and colleges at the UW. Interested in public health genetics and the law? Take a look at our Institute for Public Health Genetics, which brings together faculty from public health, law, medicine, medical history and ethics, and more.

Soon we'll also be adding to our offerings for undergraduates. There's high demand: students are clamoring for undergraduate courses, and public health employers are hungry for new graduates to replace retiring baby boomers. So we're bringing back the Undergraduate Program in Nutritional Sciences, and we're developing a new undergraduate degree program, Global Public Health, with three options: public health, nutritional sciences, and global health. I'll have more information on that in coming months.

Here at the School of Public Health we have a strong, vibrant community with more than 200 faculty, over 800 students, and hundreds of research and support staff. We invite you to read about us here on our Web site and to contact us for more information.
