UW SPH Branding Guidelines & Logo Usage

The SPH full logo

The School of Public Health logo consists of the Soul Catcher emblem to the left of the wordmark reading “School of Public Health / University of Washington” or, in some cases, just “School of Public Health” (see below).

Who may use the logo

The Soul Catcher is a registered trademark of the University of Washington School of Public Health. Only students, faculty, and staff of the School of Public Health or institutions affiliated with the School may use the logo for academic or business-related purposes; they do not need to ask for permission. This includes all forms of publication (electronic and print), uses related to research (e.g., poster presentations), or any purpose related to the business of the School and University. Anyone else must seek permission.

Everyone must seek permission before using the logo on merchandise or saleable items. All organizations wishing to produce merchandise with the SPH or UW logo must follow the Merchandise Guidelines. Contact sphweb@uw.edu with details of your project.

Guidelines for SPH logo usage

  1. Fonts
    • The SPH wordmark should be displayed in its original font, do not change the font.
    • The University of Washington wordmark is a trademarked logo and should be displayed in its original font, do not change the font.
    • Artpack provides versions with black or reverse font.
  2. Soul Catcher
    • The Soul Catcher must be used with the School of Public Health wordmark in its designated typeface; it cannot stand alone.
    • The soul catcher may only be used in its original colors and sized proportionately as part of the SPH logo. Do not change colors, aspect ratio, or otherwise alter the Soul Catcher.
  3. Merchandise
    A special version of the logo with text wrapped under the Soul Catcher is available for merchandise only. All organizations wishing to produce merchandise with the SPH or UW logo must follow the Merchandise Guidelines. Contact sphweb@uw.edu with details of your project.
  4. UW Branding
    If your publication uses the University of Washington wordmark in conjunction with the W patch in one area, you may leave the “University of Washington” portion off the logo and use a "single line" logo. (see this website's banner for example with a "tag line" logo) “Single line” logos and “tagline” logos are included in the artpack.

SPH Logo with Tagline

Our tagline is “Excellent Science, Shared Passion, Enduring Impact ”.
It appears in the full School masthead, which can be run in purple or gold:

Branding and Colors

All SPH external publications should contain University of Washington branding elements, including the “W” patch. Please familiarize yourself with the UW branding guidelines: http://www.washington.edu/marketing/university-brand-guidelines/.

We recommend color palettes that hew closely to the UW-branded colors of purple and gold. White, gray and black can be dominant colors in a palette with purple and/or gold as accent colors.

Frequently asked Questions

Do I have to use the SPH logo in ALL of my external communications?

Yes. The School of Public Health needs to achieve consistent branding so the public can easily identify us and associate our logo with our reputation of great science and enduring impact.

Can I change the colors of the Soul Catcher in the logo?

No. The colors of our logo are red, white and black.

I don’t have enough space for the horizontally oriented logo in my design. Is there a center stacked version?

Yes! When space is tight, for example if you need to list multiple sponsors and their logos, there is a stacked version of the logo available in the artpack.

Can I use just “School of Public Health” in the wordmark portion, if I put “University of Washington” and the W patch somewhere else on my publication?

Yes, this usage is acceptable.  See artpack for “single line” version.

Can I use the Soul Catcher alone, without identifying SPH?

No. The Soul Catcher is a piece of the SPH logo and the wordmark must be included.

Can I use the Soul Catcher as a graphic element in my design (for example, as a background)?

In general, we discourage the use of the Soul Catcher as a graphic element, and do not allow it to be modified, skewed, tilted, recolored, etc. However, there may be cases where it may make sense or enhance our brand. Check with the Communications team in the Dean’s Office.

My center has its own logo, can we use it in place of the Soul Catcher next to the wordmark?

The Soul Catcher is part of the School of Public Health logo, and should not be swapped out. Consult with the Communications team in the Dean’s Office on how you can accommodate your center’s logo with the SPH logo.
