Project Director, Military Substance Abuse Research (Seattle, WA)

With funding from the Department of Defense, a five-year study will be conducted to develop and evaluate a telephone-delivered motivational enhancement therapy to motivate active military personnel who are abusing substances to seek treatment and/or decrease their use. Innovative Programs Research Group (IPRG).

The IPRG is an externally-funded entity within the School of Social Work. Funding from NIDA and DOD is currently supporting studies in which psychosocial interventions are being evaluated with adults or adolescents in randomized controlled trials:

  • "The Teen Marijuana Check-Up" - a motivational enhancement intervention designed for non-treatment-seeking adolescents who smoke marijuana.
  • "Motivating Substance Abusing Batterers to Seek Treatment" – a telephone-delivered motivational enhancement therapy to motivate batterers who are not in counseling or adjudicated to voluntarily enter treatment.
  • "Marijuana Dependence Treatment PRN" – an aftercare intervention to assist marijuana dependent adults in maintaining treatment gains. Responsibilities: The Project Director will oversee all components of the study, with particular emphasis on the development and implementation of the data collection, management, and analysis functions.
  • Study Leadership. Working with the study investigators, the Project Director will contribute to staff decision-making concerning study design, share the responsibility for coordinating meetings, setting project priorities and successfully working toward timelines. Also the Project Director will take the lead on the development of protocols for recruitment and enrollment, tracking and retention strategies, the selection of measures, protocols for interventions, staffing, quality assurance, and data management and analysis.
  • Development of Assessment Battery. Working with the study investigators, the Project Director will share responsibility for the construction of the baseline and follow-up assessment batteries.
  • Assessment, Tracking, and Data Management Quality Assurance. The Project Director will supervise the assessor for the purpose of ensuring adherence to assessment, tracking, and data management protocols.
  • Counselor Training and Supervision. The Project Director will assist in the supervision of the Counselors for the purpose of ensuring adherence to the therapy manuals.
  • Data Analysis. Working with the study investigators, the Project Director will conduct data analyses using appropriate statistical strategies.
  • Report and Manuscript Preparation. The Project Director will prepare regular and periodic status reports concerning participant enrollment, attendance, attrition and retention, and tracking. The Project Director will also hold key responsibilities in data analyses pertaining to the aims and research questions associated with the study. Requirements:

  • Master's degree in social work, psychology, sociology, public health, or a related behavioral science; or bachelor's degree in social work or related field and two years of relevant experience.
  • Supervisory experience in participant enrollment, assessment, tracking, and quality assurance in randomized controlled trials.
  • Experience working with research participants, conducting assessments and tracking relevant data.
  • Ability to build and maintain professional relationships.
  • Skillful in interpersonal relationships and working collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Willingness and ability to adhere to clinical and research protocols.
  • Experience working with clients, patients, or customers on private, sensitive or "taboo" topics.
  • Experience working with word-processing and database software. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired:

  • Doctoral degree in social work, psychology, sociology, public health, or a related behavioral science.
  • Working knowledge of behavioral interventions with alcohol/drug dependence (cognitive behavioral counseling and motivational enhancement therapy).
  • Experience or knowledge of military populations.
  • Proficiency with requisite data analysis skills for clinical experimental design.
  • Demonstrated skill in writing for professional publication.
  • Experience in grant writing. Condition of Employment: A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification may be required prior to hire.
