Located at the Veteran's Affairs (VA) Northwest Center of Excellence for Health Services Research and Development, our research is focused on improving prevention and care for alcohol use disorders outside specialty care settings. We are seeking a full time data manager and statistical analyst for a five year trial (funding expected for a randomized controlled trial testing collaborative care for alcohol dependence), a large longitudinal VA epidemiology study, and our national quality improvement research (implementing routine alcohol screening and brief intervention for patients who screen positive).

Under the general direction of the Principal Investigator, this position will be responsible for management of large databases, acquiring and merging data from multiple sources using relational tools (including SQL and SAS), coding and preparing analytical databases, and performing all analyses, preferably using Stata. The ideal candidate will have sophisticated statistical analysis skills with respect to correlated and longitudinal data, experience with data management and either experience with or dedication to learning VA data sources.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Extraction, merging, and coding of data
  • Query multiple VA data sources to extract secondary data using SAS and SQL programming language
  • Merge multiple data sources
  • Prepare merged data into analytical files
  • Clean and cross-check data to ensure successful merging of data
  • Code analytic data according to an agreed-upon list of data contents

Data Management

  • Maintain comprehensive data dictionaries
  • Maintain secure "crosswalk" files
  • Uphold data security regulations and maintain compliance with human subjects approvals

Data Analysis

  • Complete statistical analysis of data as requested by the principal investigator or a delegated member of the research staff
  • Perform descriptive, cross-sectional, multivariable regression, longitudinal, and hierarchical analyses using Stata  Prepare results for presentation to research team at meetings Team Participation
  • Collaborate with and maintain good communication with multiple investigators MINIMUM

QUALIFICATIONS

Masters Degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Public Health, a health-related field, or a mathematics-related field. Work experience in a data management capacity for health-related or other research may be substituted for advanced degree, depending on the candidate's experience. Experience with two or more of the following:

1) management of large databases,

2) acquiring and merging data from multiple sources using relational tools (including SQL and SAS),

3) coding and preparing analytical databases, and

4) data analysis with Stata is preferable.

Knowledge of relational data is required, and sophisticated statistical analysis skills with respect to correlated data and either experience with or dedication to learning VA data sources is preferred. Must be a U.S. citizen to apply.
