The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an independent research center at the University of Washington. Its mission is to monitor global health conditions and health systems, as well as to evaluate interventions, initiatives, and reforms. IHME carries out a range of projects within different research areas including the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors; Forecasting; Costs and Cost Effectiveness; Geospatial Analysis; Resource Tracking; and Impact Evaluations. The aim is to provide policymakers, donors, and researchers with the highest-quality quantitative evidence base to make decisions that achieve better health.

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is a growing organization at the University of Washington. Its mission is to monitor global health conditions and health systems, as well as to evaluate interventions, initiatives, and reforms. It uses cutting-edge techniques to tackle some of the most difficult and most critical questions in global health and find answers that will become the foundation for better policies and, ultimately, better health.

IHME has an outstanding opportunity for an Academic Development Specialist to join our team. The purpose of this position is to further develop, attract and maintain a top tier cohort of postdoctoral fellows, visiting academic staff, and affiliate faculty through facilitating their recruitment, on-boarding, and professional development.

The Academic Development Specialist must act with deft diplomacy and exercise strong independent judgment at all times in a fast-paced, competitive work environment which requires creative and sometimes novel solutions to meet its academic development and planning needs which are often outside of the norm for the University.  The individual must be able to interpret multi-layered policies, assess and be able to assign priorities to actions within IHME from a competing array of demands, and manage implementation of needed actions across teams in a relaxed, but commanding, manner. The Academic Development Specialist will also work across the Organizational Development and Training team to facilitate cross-functional initiatives. This position is contingent on project funding availability.

Responsibilities include:

Academic Staff, and Affiliate Faculty Development and Program Management

  • Be a key resource for the Postdoctoral Fellowship, Academic Staff and Affiliate programs by providing subject matter expertise to both internal and external audiences, including program components, benefits and opportunities associated with the program, requirements and responsibilities, and the program’s overall purpose and goals.
  • Help to identify and bring on board postdoctoral fellows, visiting academic staff, and affiliate faculty from diverse disciplinary contexts managing all aspects of the appointment, visa solicitation, and onboarding functions. Seek creative and individualized appointment types to maximize opportunity for IHME/UW and to the candidate. Build relationships with UW personnel to foster a cohort of colleagues building expertise in academic development functions and to facilitate smooth appointment processes.
  • Develop onboarding, early training curricula, career development and mentoring plans and strategies with IHME faculty to enhance the faculty recruitment pipeline.
  • Create and implement personnel processes and timelines for all postdoctoral fellow, affiliate and visiting academic appointments.
  • Ensure all collaborators have the information needed, follow appropriate timelines and policy/procedure, and gather the necessary documentation for proper and timely processing of appointment, reappointment, periodic review and advisement.

Faculty Appointment and Organizational Development support

  • Manage employment visa applications and processing for faculty appointments.
  • Orchestrate elements of advertising, job talks, annual review processes, and other functions related to faculty recruitment and development in support of the Academic Development Manager.
  • Manage all aspects of Faculty Mentorship Program to include: mentorship meetings, identifying and executing resources and trainings, and soliciting and incorporating feedback into the program to help foster an efficient, high-quality mentorship environment.
  • Provide administrative and special project management support to the Director and Senior Director of Organizational Development and Training.
  • Expertly carry out communications, relationship building, and project management with faculty, senior managers, and academic staff within IHME and externally with others at the University of Washington and other research institutions to facilitate positive, sustainable, and mutually beneficial collaborative projects.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned that fall within the reasonable scope of this position as member of the Organizational Development and Training Team.


Bachelor’s Degree in social sciences or related field, plus two years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

  • Must exhibit strong interest in global relations, international studies, global health, human resources or related field. Must exhibit a desire to work creatively to advance intellectual content and provide a robust and sustainable professional environment to support cutting-edge analytic work.
  • Must be able to assess strategic priorities, creatively identify solutions, and implement plans accordingly systematically and with strong attention to detail, focused on a positive end result.
  • Must be able to advance work in an ambiguous environment where use of judgement is frequently required to solve problems effectively and efficiently.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and relationship management skills are critical.
  • Adept diplomacy and exemplary interpersonal skills required. Must be agile at forming respectful and rewarding relationships with people with different levels of experience and expertise from a variety of cultural, linguistic, and professional settings.
  • Strong project management skills, including demonstrated ability to think independently, to be flexible and to juggle multiple priorities.
  • Must be a cooperative team player.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment is critical.

Condition of employment:
