The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries has a unique opportunity for an Occupational Nurse Consultant (ONC). L&I is a national leader in evidence-based health policy, clinical practice guidelines, and research. In line with the Department’s goal, the ONC will work to ensure safe and effective healthcare is delivered to Washington’s injured and ill workers. Within the Office of the Medical Director, the ONC will be responsible for developing quality of surgical care review process, perform case reviews, and take a lead role in research projects related to this new initiative. This is a new position with opportunity for you to make significant contribution at the organizational and state level.

Your success will be measured by:
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data related to the quality of clinical care and develop and implement policy to improve standards for health care providers who treat injured workers.
  • Effectively communicate with the public, providers, other state agencies and boards and commissions about quality of care.
  • Ability to build relationships and work closely with L&I credentialing committee, provider advisory groups or other professional disciplines groups.
  • Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively with a team of professionals, in a diverse working environment with exposure to different ranges of audiences.
  • Ability to self-direct and take initiative in developing what the position work will look like in the future.
Some of what you will do:
  • Formulate strategy, policy and procedures for reviewing treatment against risk of harm standards.
  • Participate in planning, development, and implementation of improvement initiatives in the review and oversight of quality of health care services to injured workers.
  • Perform individual health care provider review of quality of care.
  • Provide staff support as appropriate to L&I credentialing committee and L&I medical directors.
  • Liaison with clinical associations, committees, and other key internal and external stakeholders.
Who Should Apply?
  • Bachelors of Science degree in nursing and/or an advanced nursing degree/equivalent AND 5 years of acute care clinical nursing experience in: orthopedics, neurology, rehabilitation, critical care, or nursing experience with worker’s compensation insurance. A Master’s degree in a health care discipline will substitute for one year of required nursing experience.
  • Active license or ability to obtain license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Washington State.
 
What we are looking for: 
  • Master’s degree in nursing is desired
  • Background in academia/research is desired
  • Two (2) years of nursing consultative, case management, or administrative experience
  • Is comfortable and skilled in leadership role working directly with healthcare providers and organizations; can build and maintain constructive professional relationships with them.
  • Able to effectively search scientific literature databases and other information resources for specific health care topics; understand the peer review process in scientific literature.
  • Able to organize, plan, lead, and implement multi-faceted healthcare related projects and assess how they will impact quality of care.
  • Ability to write clear, succinct, reports that can convey ideas and facts using language the audience will understand.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrates professional, clear, and concise oral presentation and communication skills.
  • Willing and able to travel (mostly to Seattle) performing the duties of this job.
