Washington State University Health Sciences Spokane and the Initiative for Research and Education to Advance Community Health (IREACH) invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate, a full-time, temporary 12-month position. Subsequent renewals are subject to satisfactory performance, mutual consent, and available funding.
Working under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Post-Doctoral Research Associate will have the opportunity to be a part of an active dynamic research program focused on improving behavioral treatments for adults with co-occurring alcohol use disorder and serious mental illness.
Research foci also include evaluating and improving behavioral interventions for addiction, co-occurring disorders, individualizing addiction treatment, studying predictors of treatment efficacy and alcohol biomarkers. There are also opportunities to be involved with other research projects, related to first episode psychosis, treatment of substance abuse in the foster care setting, cannabis research, and treatment of alcohol use disorders in American Indian and Alaska Native communities. The Post-Doctoral Research Associate will also have the opportunity to work with other addiction researchers as part of the Program of Excellence in Addiction Research (https://nursing.wsu.edu/research/pear/) at WSU Spokane.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary duties of this position will be to define research problems, approaches or hypothesis and methodology, design specific phases of research projects, carrying out complex analyses, analyzing results, developing conclusions and hypotheses, and/or presenting research findings in publishable form. Specific duties and responsibilities include:
- Assisting in coordination of ongoing research projects (large randomized trial of CM for co-occurring disorders).
- Carefully keeps research notes, documents findings, and files records.
- Publishing key results in peer-reviewed publications
- Assisting, the PI, as well as other collaborating investigators with scientific development, data analyses, and grant writing, as needed.
- Applying for extramural research funding. Taking appropriate steps towards becoming an independent investigator/faculty member.
- Participating in didactic training opportunities offered at WSU.
- Actively participates as a member of the research team, and frequently reports progress.
- May travel on occasion, including overnight.
- May perform other duties as required.

A doctoral degree in psychology, medicine, public health or a related field, at time of hire.
Experience authoring professional presentations or peer reviewed publications.
Experience preparing technical reports and manuscripts.
Demonstrated experience with proactive problem solving.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and to take appropriate autonomous initiative to carry out study related functions.
Outstanding interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
Outstanding ethics and confidentiality in dealing with scientific data and result.
Demonstrated aptitude for academic rigor, quantitative method, and scientific writing.
Must be willing to work evenings and weekends on occasion to meet the needs of the project, including scheduling participant visits and contacts, as well as meeting project deadlines.
Experience working with adults with addiction and/or severe mental illness.
Excellent scientific writing and oral expression skills.
Experience analyzing scientific data using Stata, R or SPSS.
Experience managing staff at field research offices.
Experience managing research studies.
Advanced computer skills with Microsoft Office.
Demonstrable experience developing, managing, or maintaining research databases.
Experience with online surveys or databases.
Experience preparing reports to National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Institutional Review Boards (IRBs).
