The High Containment Biosafety Officer is responsible for assisting with developing, implementing, coordinating and maintaining a comprehensive biosafety program within the Biosafety department at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute with an emphasis on the high and maximum containment areas. Biosafety works to promote a safe and healthy environment for all individuals associated with the Institute, including students, faculty, staff, visitors and those in the surrounding community through technical assistance, education, and regulatory oversight.

Under the direction of the Director of Biosafety Programs, the High Containment Biosafety Officer provides professional expertise to the Texas Biomed community in the evaluation and control of biological hazards. The High Containment Biosafety Officer promotes safe practices and procedures in biological research, stimulates responsible activities among faculty, staff and students, provides education and guidance for the safe conduct of biological research, and ensures compliance with the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules and regulations.


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Required: Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology or other related field.  Five or more years of job specific experience. Requires experience in biosafety, preferably with high containment. Experience as a biological safety professional applying working knowledge of NIH Recombinant DNA guidelines, CDC regulations for biological materials and dealing with relevant federal, state and local regulatory agencies (DHS, DHHS, DOD, OSHA, USDA). Ability to undergo and maintain a favorable background investigation and National Select Agent Registration security risk assessment. Willingness to learn and stay current in the rapidly advancing fields of biosafety and biocontainment.
