Senior Research and Evaluation Officer - The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation

Full-time position
Closing Date: open until filled
Job #12847
Posted: July 25, 2018
Description:

The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, a private grant-making foundation based in Omaha, Nebraska, seeks nominations and applications for the role of Senior Research and Evaluation Officer. With assets of approximately $3 billion, it is among the largest foundations in the United States. The Foundation’s core mission is to prevent unintended pregnancy and ensure access to safe abortion in the United States and internationally. It is dedicated to improving the lives of women and families by supporting reproductive choice that is dignified, respectful of women’s fertility desires, and evidence-based. It is also committed to creating college opportunities for low-income Nebraska high school students.

Compared to the size of its grant-making, the Foundation operates with a lean and efficient staff. A hallmark of its culture and approach is to constantly challenge itself and grantees to “think big” but to also question its assumptions, pilot new strategies, learn continuously, and put that learning to effective use. The Foundation has built an environment in which staff are not afraid to change their approaches in light of new information. Investments are viewed as partnerships, approached thoughtfully and with humility.

The new Senior Research and Evaluation Officer (SREO) will be a core member of the Research and Evaluation Unit with a primary focus on the International Programs’ portfolio. S/he will take responsibility for leading mission-critical planning, research, and evaluation-related activities across the Foundation in collaboration with Foundation colleagues, grantees, and evaluation partners. Working under the Director of Research and Evaluation, the SREO will provide expertise and guidance and set standards for measurement and evaluation activities. S/he will work with external evaluation teams on the design and development of measures, metrics, and data systems, and along with the International Program staff, will facilitate evaluator and partner relationships to ensure rigorous and consistent procedures and practices. S/he will serve as a credible spokesperson for evaluation findings and will contribute to broader conversations about the implications of findings.

The ideal candidate will be an innovative and interdisciplinary thinker with significant knowledge and experience related to abortion and contraception in international settings. S/he will have a broad mastery of quantitative and qualitative methods and a demonstrated ability to design and implement new approaches. S/he will be proactive and have excellent interpersonal skills with which to support Foundation colleagues and partners. The SREO will bring a team orientation, an ability to adapt to change, and demonstrated success working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. A terminal degree is strongly preferred and extensive leadership experience in research and evaluation is required.
