Infection Preventionist - Seattle Cancer Care Alliance

Description:

Responsibilities

  • Conducts ongoing surveillance of infection data. Investigates infection occurrences or outbreaks through review of patient records, laboratory reporting, Patient Safety Net and appointment data for possible contributing factors. Performs required documentation of findings and interventions taken
  • Maintains records of identified infection related incidents, trends or events
  • Applies epidemiologic principles and statistical methods to identify target populations, trends and risk factors
  • Develops and reviews policies and procedures to assure compliance with CDC, OSHA, Joint Commission, WA State Department of Health, CMS and other applicable regulatory and national standards
  • Conducts rounds throughout facility to observe and discuss infection prevention practices with care team members. Identifies improvement opportunities; consults with leaders to address
  • Collaborates with SCCA Building Services, Facilities Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, Housekeeping services and architectural/construction contracted personnel—provides ongoing surveillance and assessment of infection prevention factors related to the environment of care (water & air quality, general environmental cleanliness, infection control barriers, etc.)
  • Participates and advises in the design and construction/renovation of patient care spaces
  • Collaborates with Fred Hutch Occupational Health in assessing potential staff/provider occupational exposures at work. Collaborate with IP Medical Director on recommendations
  • Utilizes facility information systems or other public resources to gather appropriate infection prevention/control information (ORCA, EPIC, Theradoc, Amalga data platform, etc.) Appropriately interprets, prepares data for dissemination for education and performance improvement activities
  • Assures required HAI public reporting is performed accurately and within expected timeframes (NHSN/CDC, WA State/CMS, etc.)
  • Directs and/or participates in data driven continuous performance improvement activities through monitoring and measuring of HAI infections and other care outcome information
  • Assures required reporting of patient notifiable conditions as required in WAC 246-101-101
  • Participates in the organization of regularly scheduled infection control committee meetings and activities
  • Participates in continuing education activities at the departmental, state and national levels to promote personal growth and maintain a current knowledge base commensurate with latest research and knowledge
  • Pursues professional development from novice to expert Infection Preventionist as guided by the APIC Competency Model
Skills/Eligibility:

Qualifications

Education:

  • Healthcare associated degree required.
  • Master’s Degree in Public Health or Epidemiology or BSN preferred.

Experience:

  • Professional certification in infection control (e.g. CIC or equivalent) required
  • Current Washington State Registered Nurse License required
  • Minimum of 2 years infection prevention experience to include evidence of Certification Board of Infection Control & Epidemiology core competencies
  • Experience with high-level disinfection and sterilization regulatory requirements and best practice guidelines
  • 2-3 years of experience in a healthcare setting; oncology related experience preferred

  • Computer and IT systems competencies: accurate/effective data entry, retrieval, validation, analysis and display
  • Knowledgeable and skilled in continuous performance improvement principles and tools/techniques
  • Knowledge of epidemiological implications of caring for cancer patients preferred
  • Knowledge of high-level disinfection and sterilization regulatory requirements and best practice guidelines preferred
