The Department of Epidemiology, part of the UW School of Public Health, is consistently rated as one of the top epidemiology departments in the United States. There are approximately 70 faculty in the department. Additionally, more than one hundred health professionals and scientists hold adjunct and affiliate appointments. Faculty research is highly interdisciplinary and encompasses a broad range of topics, including cancer, HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, cardiovascular disease, maternal and child health, injury, trauma and violence, women’s health, diseases of aging, and Alzheimer’s disease. In addition to infectious agents, faculty research focuses on behavioral, nutritional, genetic, metabolic, environmental and medical factors associated with disease risk and disease outcome.
The Department of Epidemiology has an outstanding opportunity for a Communications Manager. Reporting directly to the department Chair, the Public Information Specialist (working title of Communications Manager) provides a full spectrum of communications, public relations, marketing, and design resources to support the educational and research mission of the department. The Communications Manager will formulate and strategically oversee an annual communications plan, assessing opportunities and evaluating department communications needs. Activities include managing internal and external communications of the department; maintaining a strong brand for the department, including impactful publications, print collateral, and website assets; coordinating media and public relations activities to promote the department to external audiences; and providing management and support to communications team staff. The Communications Manager is the primary liaison between the department and other UW and external communications, media, and marketing personnel.
•Bachelors Degree in Public Relations, Communications, Public Health, or related discipline.
- At least 3 years of experience with:?Content management systems
- Basic HTML
- Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator)
- Microsoft Office
- Event management
- Project management and budget planning
- Writing, editing, and proofreading
- SEO and web analytics
- Social media management
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally, clearly, and empathetically in all forms of communications, e.g., verbal and written, one-on-one, and in groups.
- Experience working independently, and as both a member and leader of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to solve problems, take initiative, set priorities, and handle multiple projects efficiently and effectively.
- Ability to quickly learn and apply new or unfamiliar technologies.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
•Master’s degree in a related field.
•Experience and proficiency with Drupal
•Experience maintaining accessible websites that meet the WC3 Web Accessibility Initiative Guidelines.
•Experience working in an academic environment.
•Prior experience with staff supervision and mentoring
