The School of Public Health Logo

The SPH full logo

The School of Public Health logo consists of two pieces:

  • The Soul Catcher, a Northwest Native American symbol of physical and mental well-being designed by artist Marvin Oliver, and
  • The wordmark "University of Washington School of Public Health," which is based on the University of Washington wordmark.

Who may use the logo

Students, faculty, and staff of the School of Public Health or institutions affiliated or connected with the School may use the logo for academic or business-related purposes; they do not need to ask for permission. This includes all forms of publication (electronic and print), uses related to research (e.g., poster presentations), or any purpose related to the business of the School and University.

Individuals or organizations not affiliated with the School should seek permission from the SPH Dean's Office before using the logo, as should faculty, staff, or students looking to use the logo on saleable items. You may e-mail the site webmaster for permission or if you have any questions.

Use of the Soul Catcher

The Soul CatcherThe Soul Catcher may be used alone (i.e., without the wordmark) in cases where it is clear to the reader that it represents the School. When the logo is being used for a document going to an audience that may not associate the Soul Catcher with the School, we recommend using the full logo with wordmark.

When the Soul Catcher is used alone in publications, it should be rendered in the red and black specified in this document. In black and white or two-color documents where the highlight color is not the School's red, use a black or grayscale Soul Catcher. The logo is a registered trademark of the School; changing the colors violates the mark. The red and black are as much an identifier of the School as the artwork itself.

Logo usage rules

When using the logo, please keep the following things in mind:

  • The Soul Catcher's default colors are black and red. In print (spot color), the red used is Pantone PMS 187. The CMYK values for this color are C:0, M:100, Y:79, K:20.

On the Web, the standard red for the Soul Catcher is #B31B34; however, since monitors, video cards, and other computer equipment vary greatly, the red will vary considerably in hue and saturation. If a "Web-safe" red is desired, #CC0000 is acceptable. The current design of the SPH website uses #B12A1B.

  • The wordmark follows the rules laid out in the UW Signature Logo System Guidelines. If you are attempting to create your own version of the SPH logo with your own organization name, you must follow the Signature Logo System Guidelines. Please do NOT substitute fonts, deviate from spacing and sizing, or in any way dilute this wordmark. Please contact the School's webmaster if you have any questions about this.
  • The aspect ratio of the full SPH logo is approximately 7.9:1; the ratio for the Soul Catcher alone is 1.9:1. If you need to resize this logo, IT IS IMPORTANT TO MAINTAIN THE ASPECT RATIO.

The Block W and the University wordmark

All SPH publications intended for public readership (brochures, newsletters, websites, etc.) MUST carry the UW signature logo somewhere on the document. Logos featuring both the "block W" and the wordmark are preferred. The "block W" can stand alone in situations where the audience knows that the "block W" stands for the University of Washington.

You can download the UW logotype artpack from the University Logos And Colors Council website.

Alternative Soul Catchers

There are two alternate Soul Catchers available for use.

  • Informal Logo: Features "UW School of Public Health" arranged under the Soul Catcher. This logo can be used in situations where the size and aspect ratio of the main logo will not work for legibility or design purposes. However, it should NOT be used in place of the main SPH logo if the primary logo will work. Also, it should NOT be used to create a department, unit, or center logo. It exists to give designers flexibility; it does NOT exist to replace the primary logo.
  • Padded Logo: The Soul Catcher has white padding around it and should be used when the Soul Catcher is to be displayed on a dark colored background.

To use either of these logos, please contact the SPH webmaster.
