Master of Health Informatics & Health Information Management

Health Information is the essential foundation of clinical care, health services and the health of the population; and is needed for the provision, financing and evaluation of healthcare services as well as for future health services research. The health informatics and health information management (HIM) profession is based on healthcare industry's need to manage such information more effectively in an increasingly electronic environment and within the context of contemporary regulatory and compliance framework. The profession encompasses a continuum of practice concerned with leading and managing the collection, storage, retrieval, analysis, and dissemination of health information for a variety of purposes. Information is managed to support information access and to guide decisions to improve care. Supporting functions address managing appropriate disclosure while preserving privacy and security of information, retention and destruction programs and standards for data and data integrity.

The MHIHIM serves professionals currently working in health care and related settings who want to broaden the scope and depth of their vision and influence in order to make a difference in their organization or to advance their skills in this area. A baccalaureate degree in business, health information management or other related field is required.

Upon satisfactory completion of the Master in Health Informatics and Health Information Management, graduates will be able to:

  • Synthesize health information concepts and their role in public health systems and the health of the public;
  • Function in organizational leadership and team roles in health information systems, applied health informatics and electronic health record systems initiatives;
  • Establish policies and procedures to ensure data integrity internal and external to the enterprise including the role of data collection and maintenance, clinical terminologies, and data quality;
  • Ensure compliance with internal and external data requirements including data architectural models, information interoperability and information exchange;
  • Manage information as a key strategic resource and mission tool;
  • Conceptualize, design and manage data analysis projects for clinical, operational research, utilization review; quality assurance, public health, epidemiology, pharmacology, biotechnology and genomics research;
  • Develop criteria to evaluate and select clinical, administrative and specialty information technology applications for various healthcare settings;
  • Assess, design and evaluate the processes and systems that ensure compliance with regulatory, governmental, legal, accreditation and certification requirements for health information technologies;
  • Design, develop and implement policies and procedures to protect patient privacy and assure information security;
  • Develop information management plans that support the organization’s strategic initiatives;
  • Apply organizational tools including performance management measures, business plans, communication mechanisms and promotion of health information as a strategic resource and mission tool to basic operations management;
  • Direct organizational resource management initiatives: prepare, evaluate and manage capital, operating and/or project budgets; and collaborate with multiple disciplines to manage revenue cycle;
  • Develop strategic and operational plans for the organization;
  • Apply systems life cycle tools in health information systems projects, oversight and evaluation;
  • Apply knowledge and skills necessary to become self-directed learners who possess critical thinking and problem solving abilities, as well as communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Administer and manage contract negotiations for compliance and data audits;
  • Apply project planning and implementation tools and resources to complex technology initiatives;
  • Conceptualize and administer metadata analytics initiatives; and
  • Design and implement Enterprise Information Management (EIM) programs within a framework of information governance accountability.
