MS in Epidemiology (Clinical Research track)
Chiefly intended for professionals who have already completed clinical training and who plan to conduct research with patients in health care settings as a significant part of their future career, such as clinical trials on the effectiveness and safety of new treatments, studies of new tools for diagnosis or for monitoring disease course, and studies of factors that influence the outcome of illness.

At a Glance
This degree is appropriate for physicians and other clinicians who prefer a more focused program than the MPH or MS General Track to prepare for research and teaching careers, especially related to patients in health care settings. We also consider exceptional individuals with a clinical bachelor's or master's degree who are interested in master’s level research careers, such as research project coordinator, or who plan to apply to the PhD program in Epidemiology after completion of the MS degree.
Requirements: GREs are required except for concurrent UW MD students, postdocs with a US MD, or foreign MD equivalent with full USMLE certification; well-written and researched statement of purpose demonstrating a good understanding of epidemiology, the UW Department of Epidemiology, and the role of training in the applicant’s career; excellent references that speak to research qualifications for training and a career in epidemiology.

Upon satisfactory completion of the MS-CR in Epidemiology, graduates will be able to:
- Meet the generic SPH and Epidemiology learning objectives for the MS degree, plus:
- Characterize the measurement properties of biomarkers;
- Devise optimal strategies for biospecimen collection, processing, and storage;
- Evaluate the properties of screening and diagnostic tests that inform the use of these measures in different clinical and population settings;
- Design a clinical trial to address a gap in knowledge regarding care of patients.
