Community Health Educator for Urban Populations - Fred Hutch/UW Cancer Consortium
The CHE will support Consortium work that addresses the cancer burden in our catchment area. This includes work to address cancer health disparities that disproportionately affect urban populations, which may include Asian Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, those who identify as LGBTQ+, or those who are poor, lack health insurance, and are medically underserved – regardless of ethnic and racial background. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Developing, facilitating, and maintaining academic and community partnerships.
- Collaborating with academic, research, community and regional partners to implement cancer control strategies.
- Advising and assisting in message development and content for culturally appropriate study brochures, curricula and educational materials.
- Disseminating relevant cancer-related messages, materials, programs and research opportunities.
- Assisting in the recruitment and retention of underrepresented populations in Consortium research.
- Staffing booths/exhibits at events to provide information and recruit participants for studies.
- Conducting community-based education and outreach on cancer-related topics.
- Participating in regular staff meetings.
Job will require travel, typically in Western Washington and occasionally out of state for conferences.
- Bachelor’s degree with major study in public health, community health education, or closely allied field, OR Associate’s degree with and at least two years of professional experience in a public health, disease prevention, and/or health promotion.
- Demonstrated experience with community engagement.
- Understanding and proven ability to work with communities experiencing health inequity. Must be culturally aware and sensitive to diverse populations in the Consortium’s catchment area.
- Knowledge and demonstrated experience working with underserved communities, including communities of color, immigrant and refugee communities, and LGBTQ+ community, and people living on low income. Working knowledge of healthcare resources and networks in the urban corridor of our catchment area.
- Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in both verbal and written form.
- Ability to communicate information in a culturally appropriate, respectful manner to a variety of audiences.
- Experience conducting trainings and/or making group presentations.
- Proven ability to work independently, and in a collaborative team environment.
- Knowledge with principles and methods of health education/promotion, program planning and evaluation.
- Experience in planning, developing and implementing public health interventions (i.e. public awareness/social marketing campaigns).
- Demonstrated experience working in collaborative public health initiatives involving multiple stakeholders.
- Demonstrated high level of service delivery to internal and external partners.
- Fluency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc.)
- Car and valid Washington State Driver’s License required.
