Job Duties

Apply epidemiological and statistical methodologies to conduct disease surveillance.

  • Lead and coordinate the collection of data from settings such as laboratories, electronic medical records, long-term care facilities, correctional settings, homeless shelters, and schools by building partnerships, coordinating the exchange of data, designing databases, developing surveys, and implementing novel data collection strategies.
  • Conduct data integration (e.g., matching/merging records across complex data sources).
  • Lead epidemiological and statistical analysis using local, state, and federal databases to support disease investigations and determine trends, incidence and prevalence of disease, and examine data for health disparities.
  • Supervise the conduct of data quality assurance, including data cleaning and developing data quality reports.  

Create reports and interpret data for internal and external audiences.

  • Lead data analysis and data interpretation, including the development of reports and written summaries for internal and external audiences.
  • Design and supervise the creation of data visualizations and dashboards (e.g., using Tableau) for internal and external audiences.

 
Design or improve infrastructures, tools, and methodologies for collecting communicable disease data.

  • Lead the design and maintenance of databases.
  • Work with a team of database developers and epidemiologists to design and test improvements to existing databases/systems.
  • Design and oversee development of data collection tools and methodologies.
  • Design, implement, and supervise data integration across data systems.
  • Provide technical supervision of assigned staff involved in data collection and management.

 

Skills/Eligibility:

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

 

  • Master’s degree in epidemiology, informatics, biostatistics, or related field OR any equivalent combination of experience and education which provides the applicant with the skills, knowledge and abilities required to perform the work.
  • Experience leading or coordinating data collection, by facilitating data exchange with partners, designing data collection strategies, or designing databases.
  • Experience with data management and analysis, in each of the following categories:
    • Experience analyzing complex databases, including longitudinal data and relational datasets.
    • Creating surveillance summaries, outbreak summaries, or annual reports for internal and external audiences.
    • Experience conducting record linkage and data integration across databases.
    • Expertise in analytical programming, including knowledge of SQL (for extracting or creating data sets), text string searches, coding efficiencies, arrays, recoding data values, macros, date/time calculations, applying formats to variables, merging data sets, transposing data, and conducting statistical modeling.
    • Creating visualizations of surveillance data (using Excel, ArcGIS, R, SAS, or Tableau).
  • Knowledge of statistical theory, including hypothesis testing, multivariate analysis, trend analysis, regression analysis, sampling techniques, and confidence-interval estimation.
  • Experience interpreting data by summarizing assumptions, conclusions, strengths and weaknesses of the data.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Proficient written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well on a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct projects within timelines.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction; excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure with multiple competing priorities and deadlines.


Desired Qualifications

  • Strong SAS coding skills.
  • Experience analyzing data from electronic health records (EHR) or electronic laboratory reports (ELR).
  • Experience conducting communicable disease surveillance.
  • Experience working in a local or state public health practice setting.
