Description:

The Social Science and Translation Research Branch (SSTRB), Division of Science Integration (DSI), of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is seeking candidates for an Associate Service Fellow to serve as a Research Social Scientist with the National Center for Productive Aging and Work (NCPAW). The Fellow will also provide subject matter and project management expertise in support of occupational safety and health (OSH) research across NIOSH. A primary responsibility of NIOSH/DSI is to provide workers, employers, OSH professionals, and the public with guidance and information to prevent occupational fatalities, diseases and injuries. SSTRB supports a staff of multidisciplinary scientists (including organizational psychologists, social and behavioral scientists, epidemiologists, and health communicators) who work in teams to address pressing research questions across a wide spectrum of priority OSH sectors and health issues. Current priorities include populations that suffer a disproportionate burden of workplace injuries, illnesses, and fatalities (e.g., young, new and aging workers, immigrant workers, and workers engaged in small and micro businesses), as well as a broad range of topics in work organization, such as long work hours and fatigue, safety climate, work-family conflict, and job stress. NCPAW oversees a portfolio of research and health communication activities focusing on the aging workforce in the United States and globally. The primary role of the Fellow will be to support NCPAW strategic planning, research, and outreach activities. Successful candidates will possess the following:

• A Ph.D. or equivalent graduate degree in a social or behavioral science is desired, preferably with research experience and graduate training in occupational safety, health, and well-being. A background in work organization factors that impact worker health is also desired.

• Prior research experience or graduate training specifically related to the needs of the aging population and/or occupational health disparities.

• Demonstrated skills and experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods for the social and behavioral sciences, with strong data management and analytical skills.

• Demonstrated experience with statistical software packages including SPSS, STATA, or SAS.

• Strong written and oral communication skills with excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and in teams.

• Excellent organizational and project management skills.

• Demonstrated skills and experience in developing and maintaining organizational partnerships.
