The Graduate School has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time 50% FTE Graduate School Pre-Doctoral Instructor to teach the Preparing for Graduate Education (GRDSCH200) course. The course is offered as a 2-credit C/NC to juniors and seniors during the academic year.  

 The Preparing for Graduate Education course is a unique opportunity for undergraduate students who are potentially interested in pursuing graduate school. Students will learn about the application process, how to prepare application materials and gain insights about graduate education. The course serves as both a starting point for students who are unsure if graduate education is the right decision for them and as an introductory pathway for all students, regardless of readiness, towards preparing for graduate education.  

 As a Pre-doctoral Instructor we are looking for you to engage with graduate school staff who developed the course and provide contributions that further refine the content.   This position works collaboratively with the Director of Program Development to ensure effective delivery of learning experiences.  In addition, you may also develop relationships with existing key Graduate School programs, including Core Programs and GO-MAP. 

 Duties & Responsibilities

 The position of Pre-doctoral Instructor is part-time .50% FTE for a 9-month appointment beginning September 16, 2020 and ending June 15, 2021.

 The responsibilities include collaborating with the Director of Program Development to carry out responsibilities and activities in planning and teaching the quarterly Preparing for Graduate Education Class. 

 Responsibilities include: 

 

  • Stand-alone teaching of 40 – 90 students across multiple modalities (face-to-face, hybrid and/or online instruction) 
  • Working with students from all disciplines, diverse backgrounds and varying levels of readiness to pursue graduate education 
  • Holding regular office hours (at least 2 hrs/wk) 
  • Managing and responding to course-related student emails
  • Managing the course Canvas site
  • Maintaining records on individual students’ assignment completion
  • Maintaining and submitting grades 
  • Meeting regularly with the Director of Program Development to develop strategies for upcoming lectures, as well as provide feedback about course progress 
  • Organizing and coordinating the logistics with regards to faculty and student speakers and their schedules 
  • Developing new materials/lectures which meet graduate school prep concept plan
  • Quarterly course promotion
Skills/Eligibility:

Requirements: 

 

  • Must be a current and enrolled Ph.D. graduate student at the University of Washington; Master’s level students will be considered if they meet the rest of the following requirements listed below and will not graduate before June 2021. 
  • Must have a minimum of 1-yr teaching experience with undergraduate students
  • Must be proficient using Canvas as an instructor or TA
  • Must demonstrate an interest in promoting graduate education to a broad population of undergraduate students from a variety of disciplines, diverse educational and personal backgrounds and varying degrees of readiness to apply to graduate school. 
  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and an ability to work collaboratively with UW constituents at every level
  • Must be highly organized, able to work independently and able  maintain and safeguard confidential communication and documentation
  • Must demonstrate strong experience and ability to work with diverse populations
