The Urban & Environmental Policy Department located at Occidental College in Los Angeles seeks a full time post-doctoral scholar for research related to race, chemical exposures from consumer products, and environmental health, with a focus on immigrant communities and communities of color. The postdoctoral scholar will join an interdisciplinary research team on the NSF supported project, “Race, Immigration, and the
Public Understanding of Science: The Case of Skin Bleaching” as well as ongoing research projects on environmental justice and community health in fenceline communities. The position will work closely with interdisciplinary faculty and researchers across diverse institutions including community-based organizations and research institutes to collect and analyze data. The overall project is a multi-sited empirical study in three
US cities to examine drivers of consumer product use in diverse immigrant communities. The postdoc will be involved in all aspects of the research process including: participation in research team meetings, designing and conducting qualitative data collection and analysis; securing institutional review board approvals; mentoring undergraduate students; supporting collaborative proposals for new funding; preparing manuscripts; and participating in external professional activities. The postdoc will help develop and teach one course over the academic year and receive professional development support, including participation in conferences, for their desired career trajectory.
The candidate must hold a PhD or equivalent in environmental studies, community health, environmental health, social and behavioral health, science and technology studies, ethnic studies, social psychology, sociology, medical anthropology, or related field. Degree must be conferred by position start date.
While we invite scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, applicants will be evaluated on their experience working in interdisciplinary teams; facility with synthesizing and analyzing scientific research in the context of social science research questions; demonstrated record of expertise with rigorous qualitative data collection and analysis; knowledge of community engaged research strategies; consideration of how postdoctoral training will help further the scholar’s career trajectory; and letters of support. Experience in quantitative data analysis is a plus. The postdoctoral fellowship is initially for one year, with the option to renew for a second-year contingent on performance.
