Description:

The Health & Safety Coordinator assists in administering health and safety (H&S) policies and procedures. This individual will also support projects and personnel with safety inspections, project planning, and employee training.

The ideal candidate will bring working knowledge of H&S, technical writing capability, and an understanding of business processes to help us and our clients proactively address their health and safety risks and challenges. This position is responsible for the implementation of Health and Safety Plans and for the daily coordination of safety activities.

Responsibilities Include

  • Work under and with the H&S Manager to ensure practices, rules, policies and regulations related to construction safety standards and specifications are in place.
  • Prepare presentations and provide training.
  • Assist with site audits.
  • Ensures proper personal protection equipment (PPE) is available and worn by personnel.
  • Work with leadership to understand and solve business matters relating to safety.
  • Perform regular safety and health inspections.
  • Interface with the company’s insurance provider, OSHA, and the client on-job inspections and H&S related issues
  • Coordinate with the H&S Manager regarding employee injuries, work status and employee appointments. Document cases in detail.
  • Help with accident/injury investigations and recommend corrective actions.
  • Develop OSHA-required programs, such as emergency planning, confined space, and respiratory protection.
  • Prepare safety summary reports detailing observations, areas of improvement, near misses, etc.
  • Research safety topics.
  • Track and identify trends.
  • Help ensure the safety of employees, subcontractors and general public.
  • Enforce corporate H&S programs, as well as federal, state and local safety standards.
  • Aid in reporting.
  • Complete paperwork associated with employee safety training and orientations.
  • Prepare written communication about new safety approaches.
  • Track safety equipment distributed to the job site.
  • Able to perform root cause analysis - lessons learned.
  • Follow Shannon & Wilson’s Quality Assurance policy.
  • Follow and promote Shannon and Wilson’s Health and Safety and Loss Prevention policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
Skills/Eligibility:

Requirements Include

  • 3+ years of relevant H&S experience in the civil engineering, construction or environmental fields.
  • Demonstrate ability to provide detailed regulatory interpretation of federal and state OSHA regulations.
  • Ability to understand data, data integrity, scientific methods, the principles of industrial hygiene, and regulatory basics.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills and the ability to balance competing priorities.
  • Developed and delivered OSHA, DOT and EPA required training.
  • Proven track record of conducting or assisting with comprehensive site safety audits.
  • Frequent contact with clients, regulatory agencies and outside contractors.
  • Effective technical writing skills along with MS Office proficiency.
  • OSHA 30 Hour Construction Industry Outreach Course completion.
  • Trained in Accident Investigation, HAZWOPER, Excavation/ Trenching, Fall Protection, Hazard Communication, Fire Protection and Electrical Safety
  • OSHA 500 certification - 510 preferred
  • Excellent teamwork, communication and people skills.
  • Strong verbal and written skills.
  • Strong analytical and interpersonal capabilities.
  • Solid time management capabilities and demonstrates excellent organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office products.

Level Placement

Typically, depending on an applicant’s education, experience, other qualifications they possess, if they are a fit for the company and local office culture, and the current business needs, a Mid-Level Health & Safety Coordinator typically would be placed at a Shannon & Wilson Office Services IV or V level.
