A research opportunity is currently available with the Bacterial Special Pathogens Branch (BSPB), Division of High-Consequence Pathogens and Pathology (DHCPP), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The BSPB mission is to prevent illness, disability, or death caused by bacterial zoonotic diseases or unusual bacterial pathogens in the United States and around the world.
Throughout the course of this research project, the participant will gain experience in the BSPB serving on the Special Bacteriology Reference Laboratory Team (SBRL). The participant will provide research support as part of the MicrobeNet Team, participating in building an epidemiological support tool for analyzing data generated by MicrobeNet. The participant will collaborate with microbiologists, epidemiologists and computer scientists to learn bioinformatics, public health informatics and IT applications. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will also have the opportunity to collaborate with epidemiologists and IT developers to build automated pipelines for facilitating reporting of outbreaks, trends or notifications of possible changes in baseline information of bacterial and fungal pathogens.
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: Fall 2020
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Cincinnati, Ohio, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
Additional Details:Skills/Eligibility:The qualified candidate should have received a master’s or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

- Informatics experience, including software applications such as R, SAS or similar for public health analysis
- Background in information technology
- Software troubleshooting experience
- IT understanding and ability to work with IT developers to implement algorithms
