The Health Policy Economist leads the agency in planning, developing, implementing, and leading transdisciplinary teams to conduct economic analyses and related research projects.

The Health Policy Economist has an integral role in the development of evidence-based legislative initiatives and public health policy by providing economic research, analyses, and conclusions. In addition, the Health Policy Economist coaches and educates staff across the agency on public health economics. Finally, the Health Policy Economist provides assistance and coaching to agency staff during the development of rules.

Preference may be given to candidates who have the following DESIRED education and experience:      

  • A Master’s degree or higher in economics, public policy, health policy, health services research, or a closely related field.
     
  • Two (2) or more years of leading applied economic research and analyses projects in public health. 
     
  • Substantial applied experience including some combination of economics, health policy/public policy, health services research, econometrics or other high-level statistical methods, and research methods, as well as a passion for using their knowledge to help shape evidence-based health policy decisions that will positively influence all Washingtonians.
     
  • Background must include some combination of the following:
    • Economics, with a particular focus on applying economic principles to public policy problems
    • Public policy or health policy
    • Health services research
    • Econometrics or other high-level statistical training including regression analysis
    • Methods of scientific and evaluation research such as experimental, quasi-experimental, and evaluation research designs
    • Sampling theory and methods of data collection
    • Basic and multivariate statistical analysis
    • Computer simulation methods
       
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in the following:
     
    • Ability to drive results in a highly fluid, interactive, fast-paced environment, with frequent short deadlines and changing priorities. 
    • Ability to develop meaningful cross-functional relationships, work effectively with colleagues up, down and across the organization, and respond to team needs effectively and efficiently.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills and a demonstrated ability to explain complex research and analysis to policy makers, the general public, and technical experts. 
    • Demonstrated ability to bring structure to vaguely defined problems, pragmatically scope problem solving approach, and manage execution.
