Duties & Responsibilities
COVID-19 Contact Tracing and Public Health Support to Campus (60%)

• Conduct contact tracing with members of the UW community who test positive for COVID-19, and track those who are being tested.
o Gather information from those who tested positive.
o Communicate with UW close contacts.
o Give public health-related guidance to UW cases and close contacts.
o Send notifications, per the UW contact tracing protocol.
o Follow up with cases and close contacts to determine their status.
o Actively communicate and coordinate with University departments to respond to cases.
o Actively communicate and coordinate with public health agencies regarding case follow-up and trends.
• Determine and facilitate appropriate follow-up actions including cleaning after COVID-19 cases have been identified.
• Monitor EH&S COVID-related emails and phone calls.
• Assist with after-hours public health and disease investigation and response activities.
• Respond to questions from University departments and community members regarding the University’s public health prevention activities, workplace health and safety efforts, and other COVID-19 related information.
• Conduct research on current COVID-related public health guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, WA State Department of Health, and local public health departments.
• Summarize and communicate research findings.
• Respond to complaints or concerns from the University campus.
• As needed, support and actively coordinate with EH&S colleagues to support campus needs, requests for service, and efforts regarding public and environmental health.
• Participate in Environmental Health & Safety meetings and trainings.
• Other related duties, as assigned.

Epidemiology: Information and Data Analytics (40%)                                                                                      
Analytics:

• Conduct epidemiological and statistical analysis using University databases to support disease investigations and determine trends, incidence and prevalence of disease to inform University decision making and COVID-19 prevention measures.
• Design and supervise the creation of data visualizations and dashboards (e.g., using Tableau) for internal and external audiences.
• Conduct data analysis and data interpretation, including the development of reports and written summaries for internal and external audiences.
• Present findings to technical and lay audiences.
• Provide technical supervision of assigned staff involved in data analysis and reporting.

Informatics:

• Lead and coordinate the collection of data building partnerships, coordinating the exchange of data with state and local public health departments and University units, designing and maintaining databases, developing surveys, and implementing data collection strategies.
• Design, implement, and supervise data integration efforts by matching/merging records across complex data sources (e.g., disease reports in local/state notifiable condition systems, laboratory data, Medicaid claims, and electronic health records data).
• Supervise and conduct data quality assurance, including data cleaning and developing data quality reports.
• Work with EH&S and Department IT representatives to design and test improvements to existing databases/systems.

• Bachelor’s degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, or related field.
• Three years’ professional experience in public health or related field.
• Thorough knowledge of disease surveillance and investigation methods; database development and maintenance; data collection and management data analytics and reporting; public health principles and processes; and infectious disease prevention and control.
• Expertise in analytical programming, including knowledge of SQL (for extracting or creating data sets), text string searches, coding efficiencies, arrays, recoding data values, macros, date/time calculations, applying formats to variables, merging data sets, transposing data, and use of relational databases
• Demonstrated ability to lead data collection; design databases; monitor data quality; and develop data collection tools or surveys
• Demonstrated ability to execute the logistical and technical aspects of data exchanges, including record linkages and data integration across databases
• Demonstrated ability to analyze complex data, including longitudinal data
• Demonstrated ability to create surveillance and outbreak summaries
• Demonstrated ability to create visualizations of surveillance data (using Excel, ArcGIS, R, SAS, or Tableau)
• Knowledge of statistical theory, including hypothesis testing, multivariate analysis, trend analysis, regression analysis, sampling techniques, and confidence-interval estimation
• Demonstrated ability to interpret data by summarizing assumptions, conclusions, strengths and weaknesses of the data
• Demonstrated ability to write effective annual reports for internal and external audiences
• Proficiency with common computer programs, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint
• Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and platforms
• Demonstrated ability to follow protocols
• Demonstrated ability to be agile and flexible with a quickly evolving public health situation

Desired Qualifications

• Strong preference for Master’s degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, or related field
• Knowledge of occupational health and safety principles, exposure assessment and controls, and personal protective equipment
• At least four years of experiences in providing direct services in a health, safety, education, or social service setting
• Experience contact tracing during a communicable disease outbreak
• Demonstrated ability to give health-related guidance to people who may express uncertainty and/or who may speak English as a second language
