Problem Based Learning Small Group Faculty - Northwest Public Health and Primary Care Leadership Institute

LOCATION: Seattle, WA

CLOSING DATE: open until filled

OPPORTUNITY TYPE: Job

JOB #: 16571

POSTED: November 19, 2020

Description:

The Northwest Public Health and Primary Care Leadership Institute is recruiting faculty to serve as Problem Based Learning (PBL) small group leaders for its 2021 cohort. The faculty will work with mid-career public health and health care professionals during two virtual 3 day meetings (afternoons March 10–12 and June 23–25) and one tentatively planned in-person 3 day meeting in Seattle (October 21–23).

The Leadership Institute focuses on the intersection of public health and primary care, using a health equity focus and an understanding of the life-course perspective to frame leadership development. This program builds on the long-standing training programs of the Northwest Center for Public Health Practice and Northwest Regional Primary Care Association and is designed to help experienced public health and primary care professionals become the next generation of leaders in their fields.

The PBL Leaders are part of the Leadership Institute’s core faculty. Each PBL Group Leader will facilitate a group of 8 scholars from around the region. The PBL case for the three meetings will focus on competencies needed to foster greater cross-sector collaboration to improve health. Most of the PBL Group Leader’s time will be spent working with scholars on the case.  The total time commitment is approximately 25 hours over the eight months of the institute and includes the following activities:

  • Participate in a virtual faculty meeting before and after each of the three meetings
  • Review and give feedback on PBL case drafts (three chapters, 2-3 pages each)
  • Facilitate six PBL sessions (two at each meeting), each approximately 60-90 minutes long
  • Attend the first half day of the Leadership Institute, and two additional one hour sessions at each of the three meetings
  • Participate in brief “huddles” before and after the sessions

Enthusiasm for facilitating discussions on leadership with public health and health care professionals is a must. The ideal candidate should have a deep understanding of the social determinants of health and equity, including the effects of racism in public health and healthcare systems. Previous teaching experience is highly desirable, though prior experience with PBL is not required. People of color and other underrepresented groups and those with experience in rural areas or with medically underserved populations are strongly encouraged to consider this opportunity.

This will be a fun and interactive teaching experience with opportunities to network with public health and primary care professionals from around the region. Clinical and affiliate faculty will be reimbursed $1,500 for the eight month Institute. Individuals with existing University of Washington faculty appointments will be compensated through the University payroll system.

If you are interested or have questions please email the Leadership Institute faculty lead (Tao Sheng Kwan-Gett, MD MPH at kwangett@uw.edu).
