A research opportunity is available with the Policy, Planning, and Partnership Team within the Division of Overdose Prevention (DOP), within the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.
The team develops congressional briefings and testimony, tracks and analyzes federal legislation, reviews DOP publications for policy issues, and works with external partners to advance the mission of DOP.
Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant may be involved in the following activities:
- Research history of drug policies to identify influencers of health behavior and influencers of risk for overdose. Identify organizational and systems approaches to prevent overdose.
- Evaluate and analyze public health programs and policies to advise management on public health policies, operations, products, services, and contributing to the improvement of public health programs.
- Analyze and track federal, state legislation related to drug policy (including opioids, stimulants, cannabis, and other substances.)
- Participate in gathering preparation materials related to hearings, briefings, meetings, and requests from Congress.
- Engage with external partners to coordinate activities, including release of new scientific information and funding announcements.
- Contribute to tracking legislative activity for Division senior leadership.
- Participate in state site visit(s) to allow the team member to understand the opioid public health crisis and the state’s role in prevention to best frame state success stories and promote the activities funded by CDC.
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: January 2021
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
Additional Details:Skills/Eligibility:The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Candidates who are currently pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree are also encouraged to apply.
