TITLE: Drop-in Staff

HOURS: 6hrs /week. Drop-in is open Wednesday, Thursday & Friday from 10:30a-2:30p, working the same day each week from 9:45a-3:30p. Potential opportunity to help cover additional shifts as needed.

COMPENSATION: $18 / hr

STARTING DATE: January 2021. This position is anticipated to last at least through the spring, while we remain on a day-program schedule in response to COVID-19.

POSITION SUMMARY & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Currently, SYM is operating a modified drop-in due to COVID-19. A limited number of guests are allowed in at a time. Staff and guests are required to wear a mask at all times and social distancing is encouraged. Extra precautions are in place with regard to cleaning, food preparation, staffing etc. We will remain open in this capacity until it is safe to return to our “normal” drop-in schedule.

Position Summary:

The primary responsibility of SYM Drop-in staff is to create a welcoming and hospitable space for our guests. Staff help to connect guests to in-house and partner resources while maintaining a clean, safe and inviting environment. Some essential tasks and duties include but are not limited to:

  • Hosting the space in a way that is welcoming and stabilizing while being very proactive in keeping the space safe for all
  • Interacting with guests while wearing personal protective equipment and maintaining a 6 ft. distance
  • Organizing and restocking supplies
  • Monitoring bathroom use
  • Cleaning
  • Demonstrating flexibility and willingness to help fill needs of team-members during shifts
  • Updating and maintaining SYM’s database daily
  • Working cooperatively with staff and volunteers

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Excellent communication skills, including a ‘person-centered’ approach
  • Practice a nonjudgmental welcoming and stable presence
  • Ensure that SYM is a clean, safe, and welcoming environment
  • Assist guests in accessing basic needs such as laundry, showers, bus tickets, gift cards, etc
  • Hold a keen awareness of the unspoken dynamics in the space and anticipating any preemptive need for de-escalation
  • Mediate conflicts and model appropriate problem-solving strategies
  • Distribute hygiene and personal care items, bus tickets, and resource info as requested
  • Enforce SYM Rules and Procedures as outlined in our Policies & Procedures

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with at-risk or homeless youth population; ideally some experience working with homeless or high-risk populations in comparable social service environments, such as shelters, transitional housing, multi-service center or other direct human services positions.
  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion and social justice within the workplace
  • Ability to take initiative and be self-motivated, working with minimum supervision
  • A confident personality and the ability to build excellent rapport with guests and neighbors
  • An ability to respect other’s opinions and cultures at the same time as demonstrating their intrinsic worth
  • An ability and willingness to love before or without understanding
  • Must pass a criminal background check
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Ability to work effectively with a team
  • Flexibility to accommodate a variety of work tasks
  • Demonstrated abilities and experience in successful conflict resolution
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to perform physical work
  • Ability to stand or walk during the majority of 5-hour work shift
  • Ability to work in a busy, fast-paced, sometimes stressful environment
  • Basic computer skills
