A research opportunity is currently available in the Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases (DFWED) in the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

This project offers an opportunity to be involved as a core member of a multi-disciplinary team that provides guidance and support to state, local, territorial and other federal agencies in order to identify and implement successful strategies to improve surveillance, detection and response activities for multistate outbreaks of enteric diseases. The selected participant will be part of an Office that coordinates the organization of national and regional meetings for state and local partners, in collaboration with other food safety programs, as well as activities related to building and strengthening state and local public health capabilities to investigate and respond to multistate outbreaks of enteric disease; this includes coordination of OutbreakNet activities, and the OutbreakNet Enhanced and FoodCORE programs.

The participant will train with a team of public health advisors and epidemiologists to contribute to capacity building program activities for state and local health departments. The main training opportunities will be in the development, implementation, and assessment of capacity building activities. The participant will collaborate with a variety of public health professionals including epidemiologists and laboratorians. The participant will be trained in data management, data analysis, and summarizing programmatic activities. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be involved in the following activities: identifying ways to improve cooperative agreement efforts, identifying gaps in capacity building integration efforts, designing tools to improve technical assistance, and evaluating performance of capacity building projects.

The learning objectives for this research opportunity include:

• learning how CDC supports and collaborates with state and local health departments to conduct enteric disease surveillance and outbreak response
• learning how CDC provides technical assistance and evaluates projects associated with a cooperative agreement
• learning about activities that CDC does to contribute to the prevention and control of enteric disease caused by foodborne, waterborne, and environmentally transmitted infections

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: March 2021; start date is flexible

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. 

The qualified candidate should have received a master’s degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree and will reach completion by the start date of the appointment. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Candidates with MDs, DVMs, or PhDs will not be considered.

Preferred skills:

• Ability to interpret and summarize scientific data
• Excellent communication skills, specifically experience preparing written documents, reports, presentations, and targeted messaging that will be disseminated via the website and social media
• Quantitative skills
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Familiarity with SAS, R, or other analytic software and Microsoft Access
