Description:

  • This is a .5 FTE/20 hour per week position. All .5 FTE positions include tuition, health insurance, and a monthly stipend.
  • In addition to the position requirements outlined below, all DGH TAs (regardless of experience level), are required to attend an approx. 2-hour TA Workshop with the UW Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL) prior to Spring Quarter as a part of their position duties. Workshop timing will be coordinated with TAs and take place between mid-February and early March.

G H 538 - Advanced Qualitative Research Design and Methods in Global Health (3 credits)

Meets:  Weds, 3:00-5:50 pm

 

Course Description: Provides students with both a theoretical foundation in qualitative approaches to research in public health and in-depth training in qualitative research design, methods, and proposal development. Focuses on how to frame research questions, design appropriate research strategies, conduct interviews, gather other qualitative data, write proposals, and analyze data.

 

Additional responsibilities/requirements:

  • Organize and conduct a series of computer lab training sessions on the use of Atlas.ti software with 35 students for the analysis of interview transcripts.
  • Meet regularly with individual students to provide additional software training and troubleshoot individual difficulties with analysis. Meet individually with students to mentor them on research proposal design and data analysis for class projects.
  • Provide routine administrative support to the instructor in course management that includes collecting, reading, and recording weekly assignments and managing the course website. The TA should help set up computer and projector equipment for class and attend a majority of seminars on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Requirements:

  • Enrolled for at least 10 credits Spring Quarter
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills

 

The following are preferred (not necessarily all required):

  • Completion of some coursework in qualitative methods, preferably similar level as course
  • Experience with qualitative research and data analysis, especially data gathering to assist students as develop their projects
  • Background and training in the use of Atlas.ti software.
  • Experience either teaching or leading workshops/lab trainings.
