Description:

The School of Public Health (SPH), San Diego State University, seeks an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) to lead its Undergraduate Division. The Undergraduate Division grants a Bachelor’s of Science in Public Health. The division serves approximately 500 undergraduate pre-major and major students. The Director of the undergraduate program will be responsible for most administrative functions of the program including but not limited to serving as liaison among the faculty, program students, the SPH director, and University administration, coordinate teaching assignments, assist with accreditation, program review, or assessment activities required for the program, initiate curriculum changes and other activities to maintain a high quality academic program, develop university catalog program descriptions, coordinate the academic advising of students of the program, and support the program students in extracurricular Public Health activities, perform special assignments as delegated by SPH director or other university administrators.

Candidates for this full-time (9-month) state-supported tenure-track position should possess a doctoral degree in Public Health, or a terminal or other equivalent degree in a closely related field. Special consideration will be given to applicants leading and teaching in a large undergraduate program of public health. The selected individual will teach at the undergraduate level, develop/maintain an independent program of research, and direct the undergraduate program. Additional responsibilities include course development and undergraduate research and field practice supervision. We are seeking applicants with demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups. Candidates must satisfy at least 3 of the 8 criteria from the Building on Inclusive Excellence (BIE) program. Candidates that meet BIE criteria: (a) are engaged in service with underrepresented populations, (b) demonstrate knowledge of barriers for underrepresented students and faculty in higher education, (c) have experience or demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring underrepresented students, (d) integrate understanding of underrepresented populations and communities into research, (e) extend knowledge of opportunities and challenges in achieving artistic / scholarly success to members of an underrepresented group; (f) are committed to research that engages underrepresented communities, (g) show expertise in cross-cultural communication and collaboration, and/or (h) have research interests that contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education.
