A research opportunity is currently available with the team that supports Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETP) in Francophone African countries, with the Workforce Institute and Development Branch (WIDB), Division of Global Health Protection (DGHP) within the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The participant will receive an introductory training and orientation on FETP and its impact on the public health work of graduates specifically and on public health systems in general. The participant will: 

  • Contribute with WIDB and Francophone FETP in-country staff with planning, implementing, and reporting on program activities
  • Participate in the documentation and analysis of the collaborative technical assistance plans (CTAP) for several African FETPs, and their strategic road maps for program institutionalization
  • Collaborate with program staff and trainees to prepare and submit abstracts and manuscripts for scientific conferences and journals
  • Participate in periodic calls with select country program staff to monitor program progress
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to adapt program content to country and CDC priorities as needed
  • Coordinate with WIDB’s Monitoring and Evaluation Team to conduct evaluations of FETPs at the Frontline, Intermediate, and Advanced level

The participant will also participate in Branch, team and special-interest groups for implementing FETP. S/he will be involved in the following activities:

  • Biweekly WIDB and FETP team meetings
  • Biweekly Epi Unit and/or Program Management Unit meetings
  • Routine monthly meetings on special topics (e.g. collaboration with President’s Malaria Initiative)
  • Other appropriate related activities.

The participant will receive training in CDC’s global health capacity building programs by using online communication platforms and tools, to help implement high quality FETPs and report on program accomplishments and engaging with international partners and stakeholders in French on critical training and health program issues. The participant will focus on planning and monitoring project implementation as well as understanding the key elements of program implementation including strategic planning, country engagement, and monitoring, evaluation, and reporting. In addition, the participant will gain an appreciation for the complexities of collaborating with health leadership in under developed countries and the contribution of capacity building programs like FETP to local, regional and global responses to public health threats.

The participant can expect to gain skills in:

  1. Collaborating with international partners to plan and develop short and long-term practical approaches to building epi capacity by implementing training programs in countries that are resource challenged and have overwhelming health and infrastructure needs
  2. Developing and reviewing professional written and oral communication that are communicated to internal and external scientific and health sector audiences
  3. Conducting program reviews and needs assessments
  4. Planning, implementing, and reporting on program (specifically FETP) evaluations

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: Summer 2021; start date is flexible

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Skills/Eligibility:

The qualified candidate should have received a master’s degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by the end of May 2021. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred skills:

  • French language written and oral communication skills
  • Some inter-cultural experience and familiarity with the West African context
  • Quantitative and qualitative data management and analysis skills
