A research opportunity is currently available with the Global Immunization Division (GID) within the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Global Immunization Division (GID) within CDC’s Center for Global Health (CGH) is responsible for coordinating the agency’s global immunization strategies and engagement with external partners working in global immunization such as Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. GID staff conduct research and evaluation, provide technical assistance, and support implementation of immunization programs at country, regional, and global levels. GID staff come from a range of backgrounds, including medicine, epidemiology, communications, informatics, statistics, economics, and public policy. About 75% of staff are based in Atlanta and 25% of staff are based overseas. Further information about CDC’s global immunization work is available at: https://www.cdc.gov/globalhealth/immunization/

Skill development in strategic planning:

  • Under direction of the CDC Global Immunization Strategic Framework Secretariat Leads, the participant will learn to coordinate the GISF-IP Development:
    • Facilitate cross-CIO communications and prepare reference materials to support and inform the GISF-IP Steering Committee.
    • Support and guide working groups (WG) tasked with developing the GISF implementation plan areas:
      • Maintain overall coordination and communications across WGs
      • Create templates or other tools to support the working groups in the creation of content for the implementation plan
      • Help coordinate WG meetings and provide communications support to each working group, including:
        • Gather and prepare materials for WG meetings;
        • Draft sections of the GISF-IP related to WG terms of reference, including drafting text, creating draft supporting tables and figures, and collating any relevant references;
        • Facilitate WG adjudication of feedback received on their components of the GISF-IP from internal CDC reviewers (e.g., CDC clearance) and external partners, including documenting the WG decision and rationale about whether to incorporate feedback or not;
        • Proofread final versions (pre-layout and layout) of WG components of GISF-IP for fidelity to WG decisions;
  • See to completion multiple drafts of the implementation plan including submission to CDC clearance
  • Support adjudication process for feedback received across multiple CIOs, external partners, and internal GID audiences

Skill development in facilitation:

  • Support planning and moderation of retreat sessions with GID on the CDC GISF-IP development strategy
  • Assist in creating agendas and facilitating meetings to solicit feedback on CDC GISF-IP drafts
  • Assist in creating agendas and facilitating meetings to ensure alignment between CDC GISF-IP WGs

Skill development in partnership engagement:

  • Draft communications regarding the CDC GISF-IP to external partners.

Support GID Leadership and the CDC Gavi focal point to:

  • Provide support to communications with GID and Gavi partner staff for Gavi-related events
  • Facilitate cross-division communication and data needs related to Gavi-funded activities

Learning Objectives:

  • Experience developing implementation plan for CDC’s new Global Immunization Strategic Framework 2021-2030
  • Exposure and working relationships with staff from across the CDC’s Global Immunization Division, other CDC divisions working on global immunization, and external global immunization partners
  • Increased knowledge and understanding of global immunization and global health policies, strategies, initiatives, and actors

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: May 2021; start date is flexible

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Skills/Eligibility:

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a master’s or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred skills:

  • Ability to learn the CDC mission and organizational structure and work effectively and efficiently with other CDC offices
  • Ability to coordinate and collaborate with diverse internal and external partners
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working in close coordination with upper management levels
  • Experience working in global health
  • Preference for experience working in low- or middle-income country settings
  • Preference for prior work experience in U.S. government or with international health and development organizations
