Part-Time Grow A Row Coordinator (Contract Position) - Kitsap Harvest

LOCATION: Kitsap County, WA (USA)

Part-time position, 15 hours per week

CLOSING DATE: May 21, 2021

OPPORTUNITY TYPE: Job

JOB #: 17230

POSTED: April 21, 2021

Description:

We received a grant, care of the Suquamish Tribe, opening the door to providing a contract food justice superhero the opportunity to create real legacy at Kitsap Harvest! The ideal person will be a logistics and people loving coordinator of backyard gardens, volunteer gardeners, neighborhood team captains, and freshly gleaned produce!

Background:
Kitsap Harvest is a volunteer powered program that works to reduce local produce waste,
provide more fresh food to those in need, and build community. Community based harvesting is
shared throughout Kitsap, providing fresh nutritious fruits and vegetables that are often
unavailable to food distribution programs such as soup kitchens, backpack programs, and
service centers. In addition we connect the last mile in access for low income housing, senior
housing, youth programs, and shelters.

Our Grow-A-Row (GAR) participation and interest have increased over the past two years,
supplementing our fruit tree gleans with the benefit of fresh vegetables. In our development of
the program, we created food safety instructions and materials to support gardeners. We have
households willing to serve as drop locations for their neighborhoods as well as enthusiastic
participants eager to grow, tend, and harvest from our participating gardens! We need a
logistics-loving, food insecurity fighting, lover of edible garden spaces and the people they feed.

Project Overview:
Thanks to a recently awarded (and well deserved) Grant, we are enthusiastically seeking a
contract Project Coordinator for the GAR program who will be in charge of assembling and
coordinating the GAR Program Committee to fulfill the duties outlined below. Initially, the
framework for such a committee must be established in a way to organize, track, and complete
our grant deliverable. This involves formulating project plans, schedules, volunteer tasks,
organizing and participating in stakeholder meetings, and ensuring that project deadlines are
met in a timely manner. To be successful as a Project Coordinator, you will need to be able to
work on tight deadlines, be competent in using Microsoft Office applications such as Word and
Excel, and comfortable with the Google Drive platform, including Sheets and Docs. Have
exceptional verbal, written, and presentation skills or are excited to develop these skills through
this opportunity.

This is a grant-funded position that has specific targets for increasing fresh food access.

Project Goals:
● Increase availability of fresh, healthy produce to address food insecurity and health
outcomes in Kitsap County. GAR will provide more produce for us to distribute to
low-income residents, including those with limited access to stores, food banks, and
farmers markets that provide fresh produce.
● Increase people’s sense of community connection by personalizing food production,
transport, and use.

Goal Measurements:
● Number of households contributing produce through GAR
● Weight of food collected via GAR
● Number of sites receiving GAR produce
● Interviews with people donating, delivering, and receiving produce. Interviews will assess
a sense of community connection, the degree to which our produce meets the needs of
recipients, and overall satisfaction with the experience.
Final Expected Products:
● A formed GAR committee with 6 people (3 must be participants of GAR). The committee
is the engine for achieving the activities outlined and managing the sustainability of the
GAR program for years to come.
● A written report documenting successes, challenges, and lessons learned.
● Your legacy- A written framework of procedures for the GAR program that can be
replicated for future use.
● Complete and accurate data on produce donated and delivered as well as volunteer
names, contacts, and hours worked.

Activities of Grow A Row Committee:
The GAR committee is responsible for the following tasks:
● A clarified and documented framework of procedures for the GAR program
● Identify possible gardening locations for people interested in participating in the program
but without gardening space of their own
● Initial coordination of growing, collection, and delivery of produce to drop sites or
refrigeration.
○ Identify possible in-kind donors and/or funding sources for seeds and other
supplies for GAR participants
○ Identify possible in-kind donors and/or funding sources for “drop site kits,” and
create kits for each drop site. Each drop site will have one or more coolers, a
scale, gloves (for safe handling), produce bags, labels (so we can track the
source for all produce), and data sheets (so we can track total weights donated
and delivered).
○ Coordinate collection from neighborhood drop sites (includes Farmers Markets)
● Volunteer recruitment for lead decision making roles in the management of the GAR
program committee
○ Recruit and coordinate volunteers for growing, collection, sorting, and routing of
produce
○ Build relationships with households willing to serve as neighborhood drop sites
○ Follow up procedure for people expressing an interest in joining GAR
