Investigators at Department of Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System, Seattle Division are seeking a full-time Data Manager to support a multidisciplinary team of Health Services researchers working on studies of Veterans’ healthcare. The data manager will work with investigators in the Health Services Research & Development (HSR&D) Center of Innovation (COIN) to support studies involving a range of populations and topics, including studies about health promotion (e.g., cancer screening, weight loss) and chronic disease management; sexual and reproductive health, including contraceptive access; and disparities in health outcomes and services. Study designs include randomized controlled trials, cross-sectional and longitudinal observational studies, and qualitative studies. Responsibilities include provisioning study data, developing and managing study databases, merging and integrating data from multiple sources, and supporting statistical analyses under the supervision of Principal Investigators.  Data managers will collaborate with other data scientists on projects as well as with the wider community of data scientists at the COIN.

Key Duties:

  • Build study databases using programs like SQL and Access.
  • Query, extract, and merge datasets from electronic health records.
  • Manage data architecture for study data and integrate data from multiple electronic file sources.
  • Clean and cross-check data for preparation of analytical files.
  • Maintain comprehensive data dictionaries.
  • Uphold data security and maintain compliance with human subject approvals.
  • Support and contribute to data analysis and interpretation as part of the research team.
  • Depending on candidate’s interests and skills, job duties may include other research, analysis, and paper writing activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidate must be a US citizen.
  • Bachelors-degree (or equivalent) in a computer, health services, biostatistics, statistics, informatics, economics, psychology, applied mathematics or related scientific field.
  • Proficient in SQL.
  • Familiarity with other standard statistical software packages, such as Stata, R, or SAS.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. This includes the ability to manage one’s own time and schedule and to track and document work on multiple studies.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Interest in using diverse sources of data to contribute to improving the quality of care in medical settings.
  • Strong independent problem-solving skills.

Salary is dependent on candidate’s experience and education. Position includes benefits. VA positions are classified using the federal General Schedule (GS) system. Target grade is GS-9 ($58,535 starting salary) but is determined based on candidate’s experience. Position involves a combination of remote and on-site work, depending on project needs and candidate’s preferences.
