United Way of King County is seeking 100 Summer Associate AmeriCorps members to be a part of a team to end hunger in King County. We are seeking full- time members to be a part of United Way’s HungerCorps team, a team that is helping families and youth access nutritious foods during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Position Title: COVID-19 Summer HungerCorps Member

United Way Overview: United Way of King County’s vision is to build a community where people have homes, students graduate, and families are financially stable. United Way concentrates on issues that affect the most vulnerable and on which it can have measurable influence. Under our priority of breaking the cycle of poverty, we are committed to ensuring that families, especially families of color, have access to nutritious food.

Program Overview: Everyone deserves consistent access to healthy and culturally appropriate food. But, since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, local leaders estimate that hunger in our community has tripled. Low-income families and families of color have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19, and are experiencing hunger at unprecedented rates. United Way of King County’s Fuel Your Future program connects families with critical food resources – including school meals, food banks, and public benefits programs like SNAP and WIC – with a particular focus on low-income communities of color. Help families in your community access food this summer as a COVID-19 HungerCorps member.

Your Role and the HungerCorps Team: The HungerCorps team is a passionate cohort of 100 direct service Summer Associate AmeriCorps members working in partnership with food banks and community-based organizations to connect families with the food they need.

As a HungerCorps member, you will be assigned to a food bank or nonprofit organization, where you’ll use your skills and experience to support critical anti-hunger work. You will prepare and serve meals, pack boxes of food, engagement with community members, and conduct grassroots community outreach to get the word out about available resources. You can expect to deliver meals directly to families’ doors at an apartment complex, serve Grab and Go meals at a community center, or distribute groceries to families at a neighborhood food pantry. As a part of this cohort, you will be supported with a robust orientation, ongoing trainings, and the tools and resources you need to be successful.

Full training and certification provided. Serve in your community with placements in Seattle, Shoreline, Tukwila, Renton, Auburn, East King County, Kent, or Federal Way.

Benefits & Compensation

• Monthly stipend of $1982.40, pre-tax (prorated by day during months of May – August)
• Eligible to receive Segal AmeriCorps Education Award ($1,342.86), or a cash award ($345.80) after successful completion of your service year. By law, only AmeriCorps VISTA members who are either U.S. Citizens, U.S. Nationals, or Lawful Permanent Resident Aliens—sometimes referred to as “Lawful Permanent Residents”—are eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Segal Education Award.  All other members will receive an end of service cash stipend.
• Unlimited public transportation (ORCA) pass
• Mileage reimbursement for travel between service sites, if required by your site placement
• Receive a Food Handler’s Permit and other professional development trainings
• Become part of the AmeriCorps Network and part of a high-impact team
• Receive special consideration for United Way’s Full-Time AmeriCorps teams beginning Fall 2021.

Note on COVID-19: AmeriCorps service, including serving at a food bank or meals site, fills a critical need in our community and is considered essential work. This is a community-facing position, and members of our team will be required to serve on-site, with limited opportunities for remote work. In this position, you may have direct contact with other team members and members of the community. United Way is following all guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and the Washington State Department of Health regarding social distancing and safety measures. We are eager to support you in having a safe and impactful AmeriCorps term.

Eligibility

• 18 years of age or older
• US citizen, US national, or lawful permanent residents, or persons legally residing in a state. Persons legally residing in a state include (but not limited to) those having the following legal residency classifications: refugee status, asylum or asylee status, temporary protected status, deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) status. Unfortunately, F1 Visas are not sufficient.
• Available full-time (40 hours per week) from June 14, 2021 to August 22, 2021
• Must go through background checks

Desired Qualifications

• Self-starters who are passionate about supporting their community and public service 
• Experience working independently in high-energy environments
• Flexible, resourceful, and adaptable
• Ability to build relationships and effectively communicate information to a broad audience, including conducting outreach to parents, youth and other community members
• Experience working with diverse populations and an ability to apply a racial equity lens towards anti-hunger work
• Second language skill (especially Spanish, Somali, Amharic, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Russian, or Ukrainian) is highly desirable so that we can offer services to families in their preferred or native languages.
• Consistent access to a personal vehicle is needed for some site placements. Members who travel between service sites will receive mileage reimbursement at IRS standard rates

Members will frequently move or lift boxes weighing up to 30 pounds. This position may frequently involve service in outdoor weather conditions, and may involve standing, walking, or moving around the service location for the duration of a shift. This position frequently communicates with staff and community members, and must be able to exchange accurate information.
