POSITION SUMMARY: 

As a member of the Public Policy team, this person plays a key role in NW Harvest’s state and federal policy advocacy work which, in total, encompasses community organizing, legislative advocacy, communications, administrative advocacy and outreach, and building a movement for the right to food. The Public Policy Manager works with people experiencing food insecurity to identify barriers to food resources, researches and develops effective public policy solutions that will eliminate those barriers, and assists with the legislative advocacy to enact identified public policy solutions. This position will also directly supervise a position dedicated to public benefits outreach. 

The Public Policy Manager works to cut hunger rates in half by 2028 by working with first person voice advocates and other key stakeholders to research, develop, and advocate for public policies that increase food security, increase economic security, and advance racial equity in access to nutritious food. 

RELATIONSHIPS: 

Internal:  Frequent contact with leadership and staff. Communicate advocacy updates regularly and assist with departmental advocacy efforts as appropriate.  

External:  Frequent contact with advocacy network, potential allies, state and federal lawmakers, state agencies, and public. 

COMPENSATION:

Pay for this position starts at $70,000 per year. 

Skills/Eligibility:

A combination of the real-life experience, education, and training to meet the requirements and demonstrate the abilities listed below.  

Knowledge of: 

  • Local, State, and Federal legislative research 
  • Anti-poverty and social justice issues, including racial disparities and the role of public policy in strategies to advance racial equity
  • State and federal legislative processes and advocacy strategies are helpful, but not required.
  • Office 365 products and Salesforce constituent relationship management or other similar tools to track contacts and relationships, or ease with learning and utilizing technology  

Ability To: 

  • Demonstrate interest and commitment to equity and inclusion for members of historically marginalized groups including racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ populations and people living with disabilities.
  • Demonstrate the initiative to learn and enhance skills that promote anti-racism, cultural competency and an understanding of oppression and its impact.
  • Practice resilience in the face of campaign losses and stalemates while maintaining self-motivated, effective work habits. 
  • Act to problem solve, refine solutions, and learn from mistakes and shift strategies or priorities in response to demands of a situation. 
  • Build collaborative relationships with a diverse range of people, including people experiencing poverty or food insecurity, through listening to understand, managing constructive conflict, and showing empathy towards others. A love of meeting new people is necessary. 
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to many different audiences.
