An exciting fellowship opportunity is currently available with the Emergency Response Capacity Team (ERCT), Emergency Response and Recovery Branch (ERRB), Division of Global Health Protection (DGHP) within the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

ERCT is tasked with the development of trainings and provision of response capacity consultations to improve the global emergency workforce and operational capacity to better respond to public health emergencies. This includes capacity at CDC and internationally with foreign governments and external agencies. We are looking for a participant who is interested in being trained on project management and operations for both a global and internal portfolio.

Under the guidance of subject matter experts and an assigned mentor, the fellow will be trained on the development, operations and management of global public health emergency preparedness and response programming. The participant will have the opportunity to learn about and gain hands-on experience in the following activities:

  • Coordinating internal CDC programs for emergency preparedness and response training in collaboration with CDC subject matter experts during peacetime and during responses
  • Coordinating project management and program activities that ERCT performs internationally
  • Supporting the monitoring and evaluation of ERCT’s projects and programs to ensure global impact
  • Developing plans, procedures, and tools for more streamlined execution of ERCT’s projects and programs internally
  • Contributing to the preparation of training activities, reports, presentations, and communication materials
  • Enhancing professional growth and development by participating in trainings, workshops, and meetings centered around global emergency preparedness and response

The fellow will have the opportunity to network with subject matter experts across the agency as well as opportunities to network with foreign governments and international organizations. The fellow will receive onboarding training and regular formal trainings throughout the year long fellowship to enhance their project management skillset and their understanding of emergency preparedness and response global paradigms.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 2021; start date is flexible

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Skills/Eligibility:

The qualified candidate should have received a master’s degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by the end of May 2021. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred skills:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Experience in or knowledge of issues in public health preparedness and response
  • Proficient in another language (for example: Spanish, French, Portuguese or Arabic)
