This postdoctoral research opportunity focuses on epidemiologic research on how community restoration or revitalization may be associated with health and well-being. This may include evaluation of residential proximity to sources (for example, brown fields, hazardous waste sites) and sinks (for example, greenspace) of environmental pollution, examination of differences in ubiquitous environmental pollutants (for example, air pollution) by community characteristics, or spatial analyses of long-term trends in environmental contaminants. The learning objective for this opportunity is to explore exposure to environmental pollutants in relation to health outcomes including, but not limited to, respiratory, cardiovascular, metabolic, or neurological morbidity, as well as mortality (including infant mortality), and how they may impact community restoration or revitalization. 

The research participant will collaborate with an EPA team of investigators on related research projects. The research participant will gain experience in conducting statistical and data analyses on large, national datasets. The research participant will have the opportunity to: 1) conduct data analyses, document statistical code and interpretation of results; 2) conduct and document quality assurance and review of data analysis and databases; 3) participate in report preparation, presentation, and summaries of the data; 4) present at professional meetings or conferences; and 5) participate in authoring manuscripts.

Skills/Eligibility:

The qualified candidate should have received a doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by the appointment start date. Degree must have been received within five years of the anticipated appointment start date.

Preferred skills:
  • Practical knowledge of advanced statistical techniques, such as Cox proportional hazards, Poisson regression, variance decomposition (principal components analysis, hierarchical clustering, discriminant analysis, etc.), causal inference modeling is preferred
  • Experience using SAS, STATA and/or R
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, as demonstrated by submitted or published articles in peer-reviewed journals
  • Experience managing, cleaning and analyzing large and complicated databases
  • Knowledge about or previous experience with environmental data, health databases, epidemiologic study design, and GIS analyses
