University District Food Bank is Hiring 3 AmeriCorps Members

Our work is aligned with the belief that all our neighbors can meet their basic needs in a dignified and respectful manner. The majority of our work is about promoting healthy food access, but we know that food itself is insufficient; the average monthly income of our customer families is less than $2000. We work to help our customer families build stability in their lives in ways that reduce or eliminate their need for a food bank. Our primary services include a food pantry open four days a week, home delivery to customers unable to access our in person, a backpack program at 14 nearby schools to ensure that school aged kids remain well-nourished on weekends when school meals are unavailable, and off site pantries that support low-income communities unlikely to come to our large pantry. We also operate a rooftop farm where we grow vegetables for our pantry and provide youth focused gardening education. Finally, an on site social worker helps connect our customers to resources which promote economic, housing, and family stability. Members will bring critical stability and capacity to our programming. Members will coordinate and oversee off site programming that is volunteer led today. They will lead our home delivery and weekend backpack work to create a consistent point of contact for customers and volunteers, and develop expertise to allow these programs to develop further in their reach and effectiveness and they will lead weekly satellite pantries.

Member Duties : Collaborating with their food bank co-workers as well as key community partners, our members will improve and elevate the success of our off-site food access initiatives. They will ensure that critical programs like Home Delivery and Packs for Kids operate reliably and meet the specific needs of their participants. Further, they will ensure that new and emerging pantries at North Seattle College and Magnuson Park have the necessary capacity and resources to serve their participants - college students and geographically isolated low-income families - effectively. Finally, they will provide the resources to grow new partnerships. Members will assist in planning and coordination, volunteer recruitment, training and oversight for the programs, weekly service delivery (food ordering, set-up, day-of operations, cleanup), data reporting, and program evaluation. Further, their experiences and assessments will help inform organizational planning efforts led by the food bank’s leadership.
