The Public Health Specialist I also known as Homegrown Minneapolis Food Security Specialist position will assist the Homegrown Minneapolis (HGM) Coordinator with planning, development and implementation of food security initiatives related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the position will work with the HGM Coordinator to organize events, activities, policy development, research, engagement and communications for the City of Minneapolis food policy and Homegrown Minneapolis activities.

There is currently one full-time non-exempt vacancy. This position will report to the Homegrown Minneapolis Coordinator.

This position is grant-funded with funding secured through June 2023; additional funding upon expiration of the grant will be sought.

Job Duties And Responsibilities

• Support planning, scheduling and implementing HGM program activities and events.
• Support planning and implementation of food security Requests for Proposals and contracts as well as programs and initiatives designed to reduce food insecurity.
• Maintain and draft food security and other content updates for the Homegrown Minneapolis website.
• Support social media and other program communications efforts.
• Assist with primary and secondary research, including drafting surveys and analyzing collected data, analysis of potential policies, metrics and other related data for programs.
• Prepare and make presentations for the program.
• Support community outreach, engagement and communication with program partners and community members.
• Participate in Public Health Emergency Preparedness planning, training, and response as needed and assigned by the department.
• Complete other related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions: Office setting and potential hybrid work setting. Regular attendance of meetings and events in the community. Availability for occasional nights and weekends, including monthly weeknight advisory committee meetings is necessary.

Union Representation: This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement between the City of Minneapolis and the Minneapolis Public Employees Association (MPEA). Base pay range

$58,000/yr - $102,000/yr

Required Qualifications: Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Food Systems/Justice, Political Science/Government, Sustainability or in a related field.

Experience: One year of experience experience performing duties similar to those described above.

Equivalency: An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be considered.

Background Check: The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

• Good analytical skills, and the ability to gather, arrange, and present information and ideas.
• Familiarity and experience with food security, local food systems, urban sustainability and/or food justice/policy issues and strategies
• Experience with the concept of racial equity and integration of equity considerations into programs
• Experience with community engagement
• Experience managing complex and concurrent projects

• Good analytical skills, and the ability to gather, arrange, and present information and ideas.
• Proficient writing and communication skills for a variety of audiences
• Ability to work effectively with community stakeholders particularly from BIPOC communities
• Computer skills including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
