JOB

DESCRIPTION

Our Field Crew is instrumental in growing all annual and perennial crops including planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting. Work is scheduled Monday through Sunday, including holidays, with crew members receiving at least two days off per week. Full and part-time seasonal positions are available. This is a seasonal position that begins immediately through November.

Skylight Farms is beautifully situated on the banks of the Snohomish River in the Cathcart valley 5 miles south of Snohomish.  Entering our eighth season of vegetable production, we take pride in growing high quality produce that fills the plates of farmers market shoppers, high end restaurant patrons, children in afterschool programs, social service agency clients and everyone in between.  We dedicate approximately 4 acres to cultivated crops, have two ~3,000 sq/ft tall tunnels, and make extensive use of cover crops, plastic mulch, and other sustainable growing practices.  We also raise 500 laying hens on pasture.

We are seeking motivated, resourceful, and hard-working individuals to join our team this season.

The Field Crew’s main responsibilities include:

  • Fieldwork: crop seeding and transplanting, planting, watering, fertilizing, weed control
  • Harvesting produce, washing and packing, order fulfillment, and distribution
  • General farm maintenance, cleaning and repair
  • Follow farm and food safety practices

Other duties may include:

  • Caring for the health and well-being of our laying flock
  • Collecting and washing eggs
  • Assisting in farmers market booth operations

Time Commitment: Crew members must be able to commit to working the entire season, from now through November.

Flexibility in scheduling is a must.  Workdays are Monday through Sunday; each member of our field crew will have two days off per week.  Because our vegetables and animals don’t take breaks, we also work on holidays.

COMPENSATION this position is : hourly, $15-20/hr

Skills/Eligibility:

The ideal candidate will have a balance of grit, patience, efficiency, an eye for detail, and the ability to handle the physical demands of the work (i.e. lifting 50 lbs+ repetitively).  Applicants must have a passion for growing food sustainably and be willing to work outdoors, in all weather.  Our field crew members must have the resilience and good humor necessary to endure work on the hardest of days. The ability to self-manage and work well with others is essential.  Excellent communication skills, a good attitude, and professional manner are also key.

At least one season of market vegetable production is preferred. Experience operating farm equipment is a plus.

Position is hourly, with competitive wages based on experience and a season-end bonus. Farm-fresh produce and eggs provided when available.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have reliable transportation. While we do not require you to own your own vehicle, we are located in a rural area’ with no access to public transportation, so it’s critical that you have a way to get to the farm in a regular and timely manner.
