Description:

The Southwest Regional Office (SWRO) Air Monitoring Site Operator is an integral member of a highly collaborative statewide air monitoring team helping to gather critical information that the Air Quality Program will use to protect and improve air quality in Washington State. As such, this position installs, calibrates, and operates sites and monitors throughout Ecology’s Southwest Region and beyond and ensures that collected data are accurate and meet quality system requirements. This position provides assistance in the Calibration and Repair Laboratory, collaborates with a diverse group of partners, and will help launch new Climate Commitment Act monitoring to support environmental justice efforts.

This senior section specialist position is integral to measuring our progress in reducing criteria pollutants and implementing new monitoring in the communities most affected by pollution. This position interacts with others often, using advanced scientific knowledge of air monitoring operations and equipment to provide technical assistance, support, and training to local, state, and federal agencies, tribal nations, academia, contractors, and the public. This is a field-oriented position, providing opportunity to enjoy Southwestern Washington’s beautiful landscape and weather as you travel between Lacey and supported monitoring sites from Tacoma and Mount Rainier to Vancouver and beyond.

Some of the key activities of the SWRO Air Monitoring Site Operator position are:

  • Install new monitoring sites and all associated equipment ensuring proper siting and adherence to applicable regulations and monitoring objectives.
  • Operate complex air monitoring equipment, including sensors, samplers, analyzers, calibrators, data loggers and other air monitoring-related instruments.
  • Travel to sites to perform quality control, calibration, and maintenance activities on air monitoring equipment consistent with standard operating procedures and manufacturer’s manuals.
  • Analyze collected air quality data and quality control information. 
  • Provide the highest level of technical consultation, assistance, support, and training on highly complex air monitoring operations.  
  • Develop and conduct technical training and workshops for monitoring station operators on the operation, maintenance, and quality control of air monitoring instruments.
  • Maintain, calibrate, diagnose problems, and repair computer/microprocessor-controlled monitors and instrumentation.
