CLOSING DATE: open until filled

OPPORTUNITY TYPE: Job

JOB #: 17707

POSTED: July 28, 2021

Description:

The American Lung Association’s Master Home Environmentalist (MHE) program provides free home visits, aka, "Healthy Home Check-ups," to City of Seattle residents regardless of housing type, socio-economic status, income, or any other criteria. Our mission is to promote lung health by reducing pollutants in the home through awareness and education. The MHE Program uses an integrated in-home visit to identify strategies to reduce total exposures to pollutants like pesticides, allergens, molds, smoke, lead, and household chemicals that can lead to adverse health outcomes including exacerbating asthma symptoms. During COVID-19, home visits are currently being conducted virtually via Zoom, but in-person visits will resume when public health guidance allows. During the Healthy Home Check-up home visit, a thorough visual inspection and survey of the home structure and the household members’ behaviors is conducted in order to identify potential sources of pollutants. Based on these findings, a Home Action Plan is created to mitigate identified pollutants with specific emphasis on low or no-cost solutions, such as shoe removal at the door, ventilation, and green cleaning. Each household also receives a green cleaning kit and door mat free of charge. Families who have an asthmatic child receive dust mite mattress and pillow encasements and a specialty device (vacuum, dehumidifier, or HEPA air purifier). These families also receive additional asthma education and resources as well as a one-month follow-up visit to deliver the specialty device and identify if behavior changes have been made to reduce asthma triggers in the home. The MHE program also conducts a variety of presentations and trainings within the Seattle area focused on indoor air quality topics.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps member will support the Master Home Environmentalist program by performing healthy home assessments, educating residents about indoor air quality issues, attending health fairs, holding presentations, and answering questions from the public. The member will undergo 4-6 weeks of training including readings and presentations on indoor air quality and shadowing staff on in-home visits. Members will also attend all required on-site and off-site trainings. The member will participate in weekly team meetings, gather quarterly report data, compile survey results, compile landlord/tenant records, organize health fair events and activities, participate in community meetings, attend webinar trainings, coordinate volunteer activities and retention efforts, coordinate delivery of devices such as green cleaning kits, walk-off mats, pillow and mattress covers, vacuums and specialty devices. The member is also responsible for the program’s social media and community awareness efforts.
