The Food Policy Analyst works in Food & Water Watch’s organizing and advocacy campaigns around food and sustainable agriculture. The position tracks federal and state policy and lobbies in support of our strategic food campaigns, including those that seek to stop false solutions like factory farm gas and carbon markets, fight corporate control of the food system, promote food safety, and assist farmers in transitioning to organic and regenerative farming systems.

The ideal candidate is hard working, creative, and driven by a passion for creating socially just and regenerative food systems that benefit all farmers, food chain workers and eaters. This is a Bargaining Unit/Union Position.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

• Cultivate strong and enduring relationships with Capitol Hill offices and relevant agency officials, lobbying them in support of legislative and regulatory priorities.
• Track federal and state policy relating to our food campaign work, and keep the Policy Team staff informed. May also lend support as needed to policy needs for our water, climate and energy campaigns.
• Assist in the development of organizational responses or positions relative to existing or proposed policies.
• Produce letters, emails, op-eds, briefs, web content and other campaign materials to educate allies, opinion leaders, policymakers, the press and the public about the impact of policies on our organizational programs and interests.
• Work closely with the organizing team in support of our factory farm campaign.
• Develop events and meetings such as petition deliveries, webinars, briefings, lobby days, etc.
• Collaborate with coalitions and partner organizations to advance campaign priorities.
• Work with our communications department to advance campaign objectives via traditional and social media, including press monitoring and drafting press releases and social media content.
• Carry out other projects, as assigned.
• SUPPORTING OUR CULTURE OF PHILANTHROPY: All staff must assist in fundraising and development for the organization. All staff must demonstrate an understanding that our members and supporters make our work (and our salaries) possible and should provide the highest level of customer and member services to people outside the organization. While your job position does not require you to raise any particular amount, you are expected to always be an “ambassador” for FWW/FWA and our work. All staff are expected to help with and participate/attend events and other activities as appropriate that are organized for our supporters and donors. All staff are expected to be cognizant of fundraising opportunities and to share contacts and information that will help build and sustain FWW/FWA.

Salary Range

To perform this job successfully, the person in this position has a high degree of contact with Policy Team and Congressional Staff; a moderate degree of contact with other staff; and a low degree of contact with members and supporters.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, political science, or related field. Candidates with Bachelor’s degrees in other fields are welcome to apply if they demonstrate relevant experience in food and/or environmental policy, such as through internships and job experiences, major research projects, etc.

Experience: 3 to 6 years of relevant experience in food and/or environmental policy advocacy.

Communications Skills: Outstanding writing skills, with the ability to write clearly and concisely for diverse audiences and translate technical materials into everyday language. Ability to speak with media and make public presentations.

Computer Skills: An individual should be able to work in a computerized environment and have adequate knowledge of word processing, email, internet and spreadsheet software, and proficiency with Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. Coursework or certification in Microsoft Office products is a plus.
