Introduction/Description of Work Group

The Institute for Risk Analysis and Risk Communication (IRARC) at the University of Washington (UW) is committed to improving health outcomes through sound science that is translated into effective public health practices and policies using risk analysis and management. IRARC is seeking a graduate student assistant to support interdisciplinary research projects in the Nippon Foundation’s Ocean Litter and Ocean Nexus Program.

The Ocean Litter project aims to comprehensively assess human health and well-being implications of ocean litter to further our understanding of the impacts and identify solutions and pathways necessary to mitigate their negative impacts. The Ocean Nexus program aims to develop evidence-based policies for sustainable and equitable oceans and society by creating fellowship programs, engaging in interdisciplinary research, improving standards/metrics that address public health equity, and effectively developing science communication.

General Duties/Description:

The student assistant will support research on the public health aspects and implications of project objectives under the mentorship of Dr. Elaine Faustman.

• Conduct systematic literature reviews
• Create presentations for meetings, workshops, and conferences
• Develop and integrate data analysis plans
• Incorporate relevant frameworks and methodologies for analyses including risk assessments, data gap analysis, and policy analysis
• Identify data gaps and models that evaluate the contribution of those data gaps to overall risk predictions with the emphasis to identify critical data needs to inform decisions.
• Perform statistical analyses with modeling and data visualization in R on data collected from well-being and plastic litter surveys in Ghana and further projects
• Contribute to manuscripts and technical reports for dissemination of results to diverse audiences
• Package resources and lessons-learned from a well-being workshop for re-usability

Hourly Pay Rate:

$28.50/hour

Required Skills/Experience:

• Current graduate student in Toxicology, Environmental Health, or a closely related field of study
• Experience running biostatistical analyses in R
• Experience creating data visualizations
• Experience integrating datasets from multiple disciplines
• Willingness to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment, closely working with undergraduate student assistants, staff, and faculty.

Desired Skills/Experience:

• Knowledge of ocean litter research, including microplastics
• Research experience with underserved populations
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate interdisciplinary research to broad audiences
