Department Overview

The Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences is an independent research institute within OHSU that is dedicated to health and safety in the workplace. Its mission is to promote wellness and prevent disease and disability among working Oregonians. The Institute fulfills its mission through basic and applied research, outreach, and education. The Institute receives base funding from the Oregon Workers’ Compensation Fund. It leverages this base funding to secure federal government grants in basic, clinical, and applied research. The Institute’s funding in 2021 was just over $10 million.

The Institute is home to the Oregon Healthy Workforce Center (OHWC). OHWC is one of 10 Total Worker Health Centers of Excellence funded by the National institute for Occupational Safety and health (NIOSH). The OHWC conducts research, outreach, and education to improve worker well-being using the Total Worker Health approach.

Function/Duties of Position

The Institute of Occupational Health Sciences at OHSU is hiring a project associate to join its Outreach Team. In this role, you will work with a seasoned outreach team to facilitate the translation of research into practice through practitioner education, communication and dissemination, and implementation partnerships. You will contribute to all three aspects of the outreach agenda working closely with the Outreach Director and the Practice Leader for Education, Training and Partnerships.

This is a hybrid position (can be partly remote but you will be required to participate in person when needed) that sits at the intersection of research and practice. This position is ideally suited for an individual with a background in occupational health, safety and employee wellness and a passion for research, education, organizational transformation, labor relations, and public health/public policy. You will interact with a range of stakeholders in this role including health and safety practitioners, labor organizations, industry groups, government agencies, academic researchers and faculty, and other outreach professionals.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in relevant field and 3 years of relevant experience OR Bachelor’s degree in field of research and 5 years of relevant experience
• An academic background and/or practical experience working in the occupational safety, health, and employee wellness field
• Outstanding communication skills
• High comfort level presenting complex information, interacting with stakeholders, and facilitating group discussion
• Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships internally and externally
• Strong analytical and writing skills with ability to lead and/or contribute to research summaries, research briefs, Institute Newsletter, blog, and social media

Preferred Qualifications

• The ideal candidate has a Master’s degree in public health, organizational psychology, or public policy with content knowledge and/or experience in biomedical research, occupational health and safety and/or employee wellness and 3-5 years of experience in the field. Industry experience in an occupational health, safety, or human resources capacity is desired.
• Experience with or strong desire to serve in an instructor/education role promoting occupational safety, health and wellness best practices and Total Worker Health in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest
• Experience developing and/or supporting strategic partnerships – e.g. higher education-employer partnerships, higher education-government partnerships.
• Familiarity with state and federal agencies working in the occupational safety and health arena – e.g. Oregon Department of Business and Consumer Services, Oregon Worker’s Compensation, NIOSH, Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) etc.

Additional Details

• Working hours of this position will vary but are mostly Monday - Friday and 8:00am - 5:00pm with occasional evenings and weekends.
• Some travel locally and nationally to conferences.
• Computer work, standing and sitting while using a computer as well as transporting bulletin boards, giveaways to presentations and conferences.
