Description:

The Ambient Air Quality Epidemiologist supports work to protect the health of Washington residents by providing environmental public health epidemiological and technical expertise for evaluating and preventing harmful health effects from outdoor (ambient) air pollution and other environmental health threats.  As a member of the Climate and Health section, this position serves as a technical expert for the agency on the public health impacts of outdoor air pollution, air quality related co-benefits of climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts, as well as climate related changes in air quality. 

 

This position compiles and analyzes various kinds of health outcomes and environmental data using dedicated statistical applications, conducts literature reviews, and provides technical support both internally and externally. It also interprets study findings to inform policy development and actions, especially related to climate change and health disparities. Findings from these analyses will be used to develop public health actions and policies aimed at protecting people from air pollution. 

 

This position engages with local, state, and federal partners working to reduce morbidity and mortality from air pollution exposures. This engagement includes leading and participating in workgroups, contracts with local partners, and public guidance development.

 

This is a full-time permanent Epidemiologist 2 (Epi 2) position. 

Currently, this position may be located anywhere within the State of Washington and telework (mobile-work) is expected. When approved to return, the incumbent will work with their supervisor to identify an appropriate work schedule and balance, including telework and reporting to the Tumwater duty station for work activities. It is anticipated that the incumbent would be expected to report to the Tumwater duty station for work activities 1-4 days monthly.

Required Qualifications - Experience gained through professional paid experience, or a combination of experiences that include lived, volunteer, and/or a combination of both.

 

Option 1: A Master’s degree in epidemiology with a focus on environmental or occupational health.

 

 OR

 

Option 2: A Master’s degree in public health with a focus on environmental or occupational health, or a closely related field.

 

AND

 

  • Four (4) or more years of experience in an air quality related field, which has included data preparation, analysis, interpretation, and reporting. 

 

  • Experience communicating technical information effectively orally and in writing to non-technical audiences.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience developing best practices for reducing exposure to environmental hazards.
  • Experience convening stakeholder groups and facilitating discussion of a scientific topic.
  • Experience communicating health risk of environmental hazards to the public.
