Research Interests

Andrew Karter, PhD has been a research scientist at the Division of Research, Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC), since 1994. He received his doctorate in 1993 in epidemiology with a special emphasis on epidemiologic methods and biostatistics. Dr. Karter plays the lead role in coordinating the KPNC Diabetes Registry (n~235,000 patients) and conducts primarily epidemiologic and health services research in the area of diabetes and its complications. His specific foci include race/ethnic and socioeconomic health disparities, diabetes & aging, consequences of cost-sharing, cultural, and linguistic barriers to health care access, medication adherence and diabetes self-management practices, depression in diabetes, and observational evaluation of the effectiveness and side effects of pharmacotherapy. Dr. Karter's is currently the PI for NIDDK-funded projects: The DISTANCE Study (socioeconomic disparities in diabetes) and the Diabetes & Aging Study (diabetes care and outcomes in older patients). He is also the Associate Director for the NIDDK P30 Center for Diabetes Translation Research evaluating the quality of care for diabetes across the U.S. He is also a faculty member of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Health and Society Scholars Program; and an Affiliate Professor, Dept. of Epidemiology, School of Public Health & Community Health, University of Washington.
