JOB SUMMARY Evaluates, monitors and enforces regulations for: residential or commercial sewage, public water systems, food service establishments, solid waste sites, new or existing building sites, wells, and public schools to ensure a safe and healthy environment. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (any one position may not include all for the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions in the class) Interprets federal, state, and local regulations relating to environmental health. Reviews applications and designs for compliance with policies and codes for plats, subdivisions, SEPA, solid waste sites, septic permits, school plans, public water systems, and building permits. Conducts inspections of new building sites, wells, existing sewage systems, public schools, public water systems, and food service establishments. Monitors activities for compliance with policies and codes. Investigates complaints and generates corrective notices or penalties as needed for violations. Assists the public with permit and construction processes and questions concerning violations. May represent the department at meetings.

Skills/Eligibility:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Requires a bachelor’s degree in major science field preferably with emphasis on environmental and/or public health. EHS I: requires only the degree. EHS II: the degree plus two years’ experience in environmental health position. EHS III: the degree plus four years’ experience in environmental health position. A Master’s Degree in environmental or public health may be substituted for two years’ experience if the applicant demonstrates all knowledge and abilities required. Must possess a valid Washington State Driver’s License with good driving record. DOL Certification for On-Site Septic is preferred.
