Purpose of Position:

The purpose of this position is to maintain the NMDOH non-tuberculosis infectious respiratory diseases surveillance program. The diseases covered by this position include influenza, pertussis, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and other emerging respiratory infections (e.g. MERS-CoV, pandemic influenza). The primary focus of this position is the maintenance and improvement of the influenza and pertussis surveillance systems in New Mexico. The epidemiologist will be responsible for the New Mexico Influenza Sentinel Provider Network which collects, evaluates and tracks clinical, epidemiologic, and laboratory influenza surveillance data. During the influenza season this position will compile laboratory and influenza-like illness (ILI) surveillance data in NM and utilize national influenza surveillance information to produce a weekly New Mexico influenza activity report. This position will also coordinate Enhanced Pertussis Surveillance (EPS) activities. These activities include enhanced data gathering on pertussis cases, identifying and investigating outbreaks, completing national priorities and benchmarks for pertussis surveillance and collaborating with the state immunization program.
