The Department of Global Health has an outstanding opportunity for a Communication Specialist. This is a full-time staff position located within the Department of Global Health and will work primarily at Harris Hydraulics, UW. This position reports to the Communication Manager and serves as a writer, content producer, and social media specialist while assisting with development and execution of communications strategies as part of the UW Department of Global Health’s communications team. This person will produce compelling stories and other content for online and print tools targeting a wide range of audiences and designed to promote the Department and its mission of creating healthier communities locally and globally.
This position contributes to building internal and external community awareness of the Department and its impacts on the regional community and beyond, growing public and private support for the UW’s shared vision, attracting world-class faculty and staff and promising students, and growing internal passion for what the University and Department stand for.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Writing and editing:
Find, write and edit short to medium-length stories that capture the breadth, depth and impact of DGH through its research and teaching, student experience, alumni impact and other activities/areas. Materials will be shared with audiences including students, staff and faculty; the UW community; donors and alumni; prospective students; the general public; policymakers and influencers; the regional public health practice community; and national public health peers.
• Production and coordination:
Add to and update DGH’s content engine; monitor and review the DGH website, including centers, programs, and initiatives (CPIs); prepare newsletters for production using email marketing systems such as Marketo; assist with production of print products such as the DGH annual report and brochures; maintain and update an editorial calendar; and work closely with other CPI communicators on shared objectives and community building.
• Social media:
Monitor and post to social media, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram.
• Content strategy and planning:
Write reports and analyze data to inform ongoing communications strategies; propose new ways and strategies to reach target audiences; weave strategic thinking into everything we do.
• Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, communications, marketing, global health, international studies or related field
• 2 years of experience producing original and compelling content for a variety of print and online vehicles, including social media platforms
• Experience translating complex scientific jargon into clear and compelling prose
• Experience creating marketing content for various audiences, including students, donors, and local and international global health partners
• Multicultural sensitivity and be committed to promoting diversity
• Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
• Ability and flexibility to work independently in a team environment juggling multiple responsibilities under pressure while maintaining grace and humor
• Enthusiasm for working with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds
• Strong problem-solving and organizational skills
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
• Photoshop and In-design skills
• Familiarity with and commitment to the mission and values of public health and global health
• Master’s degree in public health, student affairs, education, social work, international studies, or related field
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
This is a full-time 40 hour per week position that requires flexibility of work schedule in accordance with fluctuating workloads and deadlines of the academic year. Some weekend and evening work required.
